I really like Smith's potential. I had hoped he'd make the final 53 man roster going into this season. I wonder if he'll get any playing time at all...

Joe Webb has been seeing the field, I hope to god Smith can Laughing

Interesting, when did he have these hip problems? I didnt expect Smith to play anyway given that he is currently the 6th WR. Otherwise, if Smith was injured im not sure why a team would put a claim in for him which makes me wonder why MN added a 6th WR to the roster. I had thought the Vikes promoted Smith to protect him but if he isnt even healthy, what is the point. Perhaps he gets placed on injured reserve, i just dont see an opportunity for playing time for him this year. Especially if Childs returns.

I re-did my cap figures for next season, and with the NFL cap expected to remain relatively flat going in to next season (an increase to $122M is expected) my number of around $33M in cap space is incorrect. It's closer to $28M.

However, another $8.1M can be freed up (possibly more if Carlson is pegged as post June-1st cut) from cutting Carlson, Guion, and not retaining Matt Cassel.

If I remember correctly, the rookie cap pool last year was around $8M. How much more will it be taken up with a top 10 pick vs 3 late 1st rounders?

It was around $6M APY for our three first rounders. A top 5 pick goes from $5.5M to $4.5M.

So a top 5 pick, and a top 5 second round pick, and a top 5 third round pick would be about $1M higher than what we had this year.

Made another mistake... cap this year is 123M, an next year is likely to be around 124M so our cap space, assuming Cassel picks up his option, would be just under 28M

It was 6.8m

It was 8.5m in 2012

So they should have about $20M when accounting for draft picks? Nice.

That goes away real fast if they franchise Freeman.

There's zero chance of that happening.

And you're 100% certain of that because? What if Freeman lights it up to end the season, but the Vikings don't want to commit to a long term deal right away?

The franchise number for Qbs is huge and Freeman isn't that good.

We've yet to see what Freeman can do here; you're making an awfully early and rash judgement.

The Vikings have the cap space, and haven't been huge free agent spenders since Spielman fully took over as GM.

All I'm saying is that it's a possibility, not that it's going to happen. If the Vikings like what they see, but want more than 11 games to make a decision, it's a very real possibility. There is a reason Freeman didn't want more than a one year deal as well, if he succeeds here, he plans to cash in.

The Tag is a possibilty for Freeman.
If Freeman plays well or very good here, he will be looking to cash in (which is fair). If Rick wants to see more then 10 games to make a decision that will affect the franchise for 4 years, the comprimise is to tag for one year at the high rate & reevaluate after another 16 games.

Freeman playing well could mean, us sitting with 6-7 wins at the end of the year, and we've played ourselves out of MM, Hundley. You'd be left with Boyd (ugh), Mettenberger, or Carr or someone else.

Also if u do draft a QB its easy to move on from one year of tagged Freeman, so the rookie QB starts in the 2nd year.
