Not a play by play, blow by blow description this week.

Peterson was beaten on the one big play for the 72 yard TD, but outside of that he had a pretty good day. The technique could have been better on the short touchdown, but overall Peterson was generally not thrown at in man coverage and those targets that came in zone he usually took down the receiver with speed. 4 catches for 30 yards outside of that big 72 yarder is not a bad day for Peterson considering the time he spent line up over Calvin Johnson.

Powers was generally avoided all day because he was being lined up over guys like Kris Durham and a flexed Joique Bell. Bit of a non factor. The stats will be out by 1 target, 1 completion and 10 yards on Powers because of a play that was wiped out by a penalty that I have included in the numbers.

Mathieu is a physical player for a guy of his size and looks solid coverage in both zone and man coverage, better than I expected. Does not give up YAC. Encouraging start from the rookie.

Yeremiah Bell is just bad in coverage. He was abused by Reggie Bush on a 26 yard gain and continually finds himself out of position. Not sure he should be on the field right now.

Tony Jefferson looked assured in his first NFL start, gave up one catch in a short zone then made the tackle. Instinctive player, reads and reacts very quickly, similar to Mathieu in this aspect.

Karlos Dansby gave up 2 catches for 20 yards on two targets to.....Calvin Johnson. The perils of zone coverages when you get a guy like Johnson running short drags or crossing routes you end up with guys like Dansby trying to cover a guy like Calvin Johnson. Both catches were short throws, but the first Dansby made himself look stupid trying to lay a hit on Johnson who did not even flinch and went on to grab 15+ YAC on an 18 yard grab. The second time around Dansby wrapped up and stopped Johnson for 2 yards on 3rd and 5.

Did not see a lot of Brinkley this game. I think he spent much of it on the bench.

Lions were able to consistently pick up 5-8 yards on their screen plays. The two in-completions were poor WR screens to Stafford left. The first could and maybe should have been intercepted by Jerraud Powers after the drop from the WR.

The Cardinals did not do a lot differently in the first half to the second half yet Stafford was 16/20 for 210 yards and two TD's in the first half and 8/16 for 68 yards in the second half. The big difference was the execution of the Lions players, dropped passes being the biggest one followed by Stafford forcing passes to his TE in coverage. Stafford went 0/4 in the third quarter, two of those in-completions were forced throws into Pettigrew in the coverage of Dansby (Who to be fair made a couple of good plays on these throws). It is a little bit scary to think that the success of our defensive unit relies more of the execution (or lackthereof) of the opposition offense as opposed to us being out there and making plays.

The one thing that was noticeably improved from the first to the second half was the tackling. It got us off the field on 3rd downs and also helped us put the Lions offense in less favorable situations.

As always, enjoy and any questions just ask.

Yeah I think the numbers are a bit deceiving but Dansby played very well in coverage last week.

Mathieu seems to be giving up a ton of catches but man is he a solid tackler.

He made two good plays on Pettigrew, and one on a catch allowed to Johnson, but he also had his fair share of struggles. Was a very up and down game in coverage for him.

Agreed, everything that was completed on him was short and he tackled the receiver as soon as he caught it. Even the long TD would've been a 10 yard catch if he didn't think Dansby intercepted it for a split second.

Was repeatedly in good positions when Johnson tested him vertically in man coverage. But that one black mark is a big one. Gotta stay focused, gotta finish. One play like that can be the difference between a win and a loss.

I have a man crush onTony Jefferson. He just plays smart and is good in coverage, and the fact he was undrafted! I just love the kid, I hope him and Mathieu are on this team for a loooooooooong time
