Currently, these two are the unquestioned 1-2 prospects in the draft. Since the beginning of last offseason, the Jaguars have been one of the most referenced teams when discussing who will get the first pick. After one very bad game, the Jaguars have done nothing to dispel those thoughts. For the next 242 days, unless the Jaguars start winning some games, this will be a discussion that dominates that timeframe.

The Jaguars currently appear to have a huge need at both QB and DE with no apparent answers on the roster. Both of these players would look to be huge upgrades at the positions that they play and would likely become a cornerstone at their respective positions for the next decade.

In a Quarterback driven league, it's largely accepted that the two most important phases of the game is to pass the ball on offense, and disrupt the passer on defense. These two players can fill one of those two needs.

QB Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville Cardinals

Year: Junior
Age: 20
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 218 lbs

At Quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater is one of the most polished passers as a prospect that we've seen recently, rivaling and exceeding many of the recent #1 overall picks. Displaying great accuracy, very good arm strength and sound mechanics, Bridgewater shows all the physical traits of a great passer. He pairs that with a fundamentally sound understanding of the game, Teddy's ability to read a defense, anticipate throws and throw receivers open is (in my opinion) unrivaled in college football currently. While Bridgewater's bread and butter as a Quarterback is his ability as a passer, he is also has very good athleticism for a Quarterback. His movement in the pocket is sound, and he does so while keeping his eyes downfield. Teddy, however, is not a running QB, neither run first nor run second. He will take what the defense gives him as a runner, but he will not drop his head and start running once his first read breaks down.

Teddy would come in and be a Day One starter at Quarterback, and an Offensive Rookie of the Year shoe-in. He can become a top 10, top 5 Quarterback in the league throughout his career.

vs

DE Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina Gamecocks

Year: Junior
Age: 20
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 274 lbs

At Defensive End, Jadeveon Clowney is being billed as a once in a lifetime prospect. With his large frame, one would never expect the athleticism that he has. It has been reported that Clowney has ran a 4.5 40. That is unheard of from linemen his size, and watching him play, it isn't hard to believe that he could have that level of speed. Clowney's frame and size also gives him great strength and he uses that strength effectively with his body positioning. Clowney isn't all speed and strength though, as he has a very wide variety of pass rush moves that he uses effortlessly. Clowney is a fundamentally sound, big hit tackler. While statistically, Clowney isn't showing up as much as box score scouts would like him to be this season, he is making all sorts of waves on defense, forcing triple teams and teams to game plan completely away from him.

Jadeveon would come in and challenge to be a Day One starter at Defensive End in the 4-3 and likely at LEO in the 4-3 Under, taking over as a starter by midseason. I say challenge because the team may likely choose to bring him slowly into the gameplan as he becomes more comfortable. Clowney should be able to put up close to double digit sacks his first season. He can become a top 5, best in the league pass rusher in the league throughout his career.

Way to jump the gun...

But since it makes more than a little since, seeing as how we mailed it in less than halfway through - Marcus Mariota should be in there too.

There's an awful lot of football to be played though.

We're a team that everyone has believed would be in contention for these two since last season ended. It's not jumping the gun at all, it's a discussion that's going to dominate the next 242 days.

If we're talking taking Clowney and then coming back for another player at the top of the second or third, sure.

For me, it's Teddy. Unless you are absolutely certain, 100%, that you can get a 1-2 punch like San Fran got in 2011 with Aldon Smith and Colin Kaepernick. That's the only way you don't take Teddy, is if you're certain you can get a great QB in the second. And I'm just not sure you can ever be that confident. Teddy for me.

its really not a debate. Its Teddys position to lose. Sure the Jaguars pass rush is non existent but you have to score in the NFL to win.

He's affected the play calling and planning of the OC the first two games, its about more than stats.
