For just the second time in franchise history, the New York Jets will start a rookie signalcaller on opening day.

"We're going to go with Geno Smith as our quarterback and we are excited about that, head coach Rex Ryan told me of his Week 1 starter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It's crazy how much hate we are getting for starting him. He's clearly the best QB on the roster so why shouldn't he be starting again?

Cause if he does bad it'll hurt his confidence? Give me a break with that nonsense. Best way to learn is by doing.

There is alot to like about Smith who I think will prove the doubters wrong.

If he struggles badly after 4 games they might go back to Sanchez. However he doesn't need to be better than Sanchez to stay in there. All he needs to do is show he can take care of the football and show the ability to pick up first downs throwing the ball on 1st and 2nd down. This team needs to stay away from the constant 3rd down situations. Also, Geno needs to flash some big play ability by seasons end. With next years QB class, we can't go forward with a caretaker when there's playmakers to be taken.

Really, only Sanchez and Geno have been our only rookie QB opening day starters? I thought there would have been more.

Pretty bad situation for the Jets cap wise though, Mark Sanchez is making $8.75 million to sit on the bench this season.

He wasn't going to earn that money anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

After this season he'll be gone and not a concern to the Jets.

I just hope he's ready. I'm not sure he is.

I am shocked. I thought I heard Brett Favre was coming out of retirement to lead the Jets.

This is our second in a few years. It is really not common in the history of the NFL. Lot less than you would think.

Start him and we're basically paying him 8.75 million dollars to give the ball to the other team. At least he's not hurting the team by sitting on the bench.

Sitting him does not make the contract any worse. It's not possible for that contract to be any worse.
