Finally, the offseason is over! No more pondering countless "what if" scenarios and using the most over-used word in the offseason "potential". The months of waiting are done and the game actually count for now. Houston gets to open up the season in front of national television playing the San Diego Chargers on the road. While the Texans have won the AFC South twice in a row, the Chargers have flirted with mediocrity the past few seasons. However, they've got a new head coach and Houston will be missing a few key starters. Can Houston overcome this and start the season off on the right foot.

X-FACTORS: WHITNEY MERCILUS

For some reason, I have a fear that our pass rush is going to rely strictly on JJ Watt. He was the defensive player of the year so it's not necessarily a bad thing, but I think that Mercilus needs to step up and be a dominant OLB pass rusher. Rivers came make the throws if you give him time, but it's so much easier to get pressure in his face and have him force errant throws. With San Diego's offensive line in flux (only 1 returning starter from last year), Mercilus needs to have a massive game.

KEYS TO THE GAME
1) Jump out to a quick lead and coast. Houston has a very straight-forward strategy. Jump out to an early lead and then rely on the defense and running game to control the rest of the game. Houston gets into trouble when they fall behind early.

2) Win the turnover battle. Houston did a good job avoiding INTs during the preseason although they did put the ball on the ground a few times. They need to make sure to take care of the ball and not become victims of careless turnovers.

3) Improved special teams play. One of Houston's biggest weaknesses is it's special teams play. Our returners are mediocre, our kick coverage leaves some giant running lanes, and the only big play we had all pre-season was called back. We need to keep this in check.

I'm glad you have special teams as a key. Are awful special teams is going to cost us this year if we don't improve.

I like your pick of Mercilus at the x-factor, but would like to add /Jefferson to the mix. There's no way Mercilus plays every defensive snap after missing much of camp with the injury, so will see presumably Willie in on 3rd and long and passing downs. And with Willie's natural pass rushing moves I think he'll be able to get to Rivers as he tends to hold on the the ball (which could change with a new HC, but old habits die hard)

Looking at the game as a whole, I think the real x-factor between the 2 teams is, Ryan Mathews. We stop him/their running game and will win his handily.

It would be good if the guys we expect to not play Monday end up playing. I doubt Reed will play, and to be honest we dont need him to beat the Chargers.

If we generate pressure on Rivers then it will be a long night for him. DJ Fluker, their 1st round pick isnt ready for pass protection and the Chargers don't have any receivers that scare me minus Gates, but Gates isnt his former self.

I am fully fine with Foster and Tate splitting carries. It will keep each other fresh (especially Foster until he gets to 100 percent).

Monday need to hurry up, Im ready for some football!

Not that it is at all relevant to this season, but I'm pretty sure the Chargers are one of two teams the Texans have not beaten.

I didn't want to be to ostentatious Wink

Plus, I'm hoping the others in the front 7 can attribute to the pressure.

Under. I think they take him out of the game and allow our OLBs to try to do damage.

They can't double him EVERY play, but if they try too, you can fully expect to see Wade sell shooting Cush into the gaps to counteract.

So Wade is going to start (thank goodness)

Arian supposedly was impressing the coaching staff at practice today.

Sharpton had a concussion (cut the injured srub already)

Kub said it's possible that Reed plays.

Is it Monday yet???

Texans come out overconfident, Phillip Rivers comes out with a chip on his shoulder the size of DJ Fluker, Ryan Mathews doesn't spontaneously break after the coin flip lands on his foot, JJ Watt does his best Lenny Kekua impression...

Texans lose, 21-10.
