Will someone please PM me how to quote someone. I've tried the quote thing and I can't get it to work.

So here, Ditch, I don't want to pin Dawson, just pointing out how good he was and how bad we might need what he provided if we want to win this year. You know, that game that comes down to the final drive needing a FG instead of being 4 behind because our kicker is 2-2, or 2-3 in the first 45 minutes.

I'd hate to be behind by 8-10 because our kicker was 0-2. But we have Billy now. Hasn't this cat been there, done that and now we have a has been?

I'm hoping for the best.

And by the way, who posted about not liking the draft and now we have 13 Rook's. OK, again, I'll hope for the best that Lombardi knows something.

I'm laughing out load pretty hard right now.

I could be wrong.

I like this thinking. I'd have to look into this. You know as well as I do, there's always more thought in so many numbers. Let me work on it.

I haven't crunched any numbers other than the following--so please let me know if you find something to the contrary. But it looks to me like the Browns are looking at the kicker position as more than just the guy who makes long FGs.

Since 2011, when the kickoff was moved to the 35 yard line, Cundiff has 105 KOs with 62 touchbacks (59%) and 40 (38%)were returned.

For comparison--during the same time, Dawson had 136 KOs with 40 touchbacks (29%) and 89 (65%) were returned.

I think that turned out to be the difference between Cundiff and the other kickers, as well as the reason the 2 other guys were cut AND a potential reason that Dawson wasn't as important to the current regime as some would have liked.

What's weird is that bruceb is responsible for my looking into this. He has pointed out several times how important Paul Brown thought field position was (which it clearly is), but I was having trouble figuring out how this translates into today's NFL.

Well, it looks like these guys would rather risk losing out on 3 points on a long FG to give them a better chance to not give up 7 on a shorter offensive drive by the opponent.

I think that makes good sense.

I also noticed (with help from Je'Rod Cherry) that we are facing some top returners our first 3 games of the season. Pretty good idea to have a kicker that gets a lot of touchbacks.

I'm going to start with the return average in front of the goal line and behind it with net results in comparison to the 20 yard line.

First results are Cundiff has a stronger leg than Dawson on kickoffs.

Not putting it between the posts I'm looking into.

Results coming soon but the eye test from many will be Dawson kept us in games with (sometimes) 50+ yarders in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Cundiff, hasn't he had his chance and been run out of the league?

I'm going to look at not just a kicker who can hit the big one with 3 seconds left down by 1, but who hit the 50 plus and has a great average overall though 60 minutes of the game so we can only be down by less than a field goal at the end with 1 second left.

Yea right, I get it, lets be up by 10 with 2 minutes left so we don't need Dawson and counting on Field Goals from the 2nd and 3rd quarters to keep it close.

Let's blow out some games this year. I'd like to Win and WIN big.

I'd like to be banging mid forth quarter because it"s in the bag.
