Browns fans will find anything to complain about.

Its a kicker.

Since 2009- he's 1 for 11 outside of 50 yards. #terribad

Inside 50 yards? He's 72 of 84. #85.7%

As long as he is inside 50 yards we are ok, I suppose.

No use pining for Dawson, though. That ship has sailed.

Something tell me we were predestined to go for it on 4th down from that distance anyway, regardless of who the kicker ended up being.

Or we get to see some sweet punt action.

Yes, it seems Haslam's reaction when we punted on 4th and 1 revealed that to us all.

By the way, Cundiff seems to be better than Phil at kickoffs, so there's that.

I liked the We have no kicker thread better.

Ugh. Cundiff was good in 2010, but has been pretty bad besides that season. I would have rather kept Bogotay or Graham.

Graham was much worse... Bogotay is injured and on IR. He may be our kicker next season.

I like that you capitalized We referring to Browns Fans.

Last year, Graham made 31 of 38 attempts. Cundiff was only 7/12 last year and 28/37 the year prior. I don't see how Graham was much worse than Cundiff in recent years.

I thought I read somewhere that Bogotay was released. I'm glad that he could potentially be Cleveland's kicker in 2014.

good post.

No one would be good enough to replace Phil, but Cundiff did a good just last time he was in a browns uniform. However, Im sure we can all agree that hopefully we see more of the offense putting the ball in the end zone so we dont need to worry about a kicker anyways...

I did not know he was that good inside 50. That actually makes it a pretty good signing. If he is kicking and missing 50yard kicks, it means he sucks and that our offense sucks for not being able to gett him any closer

I haven't crunched any numbers other than the following--so please let me know if you find something to the contrary. But it looks to me like the Browns are looking at the kicker position as more than just the guy who makes long FGs.

Since 2011, when the kickoff was moved to the 35 yard line, Cundiff has 105 KOs with 62 touchbacks (59%) and 40 (38%)were returned.

For comparison--during the same time, Dawson had 136 KOs with 40 touchbacks (29%) and 89 (65%) were returned.

I think that turned out to be the difference between Cundiff and the other kickers, as well as the reason the 2 other guys were cut AND a potential reason that Dawson wasn't as important to the current regime as some would have liked.

What's weird is that bruceb is responsible for my looking into this. He has pointed out several times how important Paul Brown thought field position was (which it clearly is), but I was having trouble figuring out how this translates into today's NFL.

Well, it looks like these guys would rather risk losing out on 3 points on a long FG to give them a better chance to not give up 7 on a shorter offensive drive by the opponent.

I think that makes good sense.

I also noticed (with help from Je'Rod Cherry) that we are facing some top returners our first 3 games of the season. Pretty good idea to have a kicker that gets a lot of touchbacks.
