Not sure if this needed it's own thread or not, but didn't see it in any of the other threads. Per Adam Schefter, league source says that the 49ers have signed 4th round draft pick Chris Harper away from Seattle's practice squad.

SF added WR help by way of Seattle. 49ers signed WR Chris Harper off Seattle's practice squad, per league source

It's a waste of a roster spot this year. He has potential though.

I didn't like him pre-draft; I thought there was no way he could play wide receiver and would have to move to tight end. The fact that he was cut by Seattle semi-proved me correct in that assumption. But who knows, maybe harbaugh and company are looking at switching him to tight end.

I liked Harper coming out of the draft, he reminded me of a mini Anquan.

This. A faster, quicker, Anquan. I really liked his potential. I like the move.

The #49ers are looking at Chris Harper not as a WR but as a TE, H-back in the Delanie Walker mold. He's 6-1, 235 pounds.

Can't be worse than Garrett Celek...

I think if Celek is gone once Manningham is back.

Tukuafu is prob gone when Dobbs is back.

The other 4 not as sure.

WR Chris Harper, actually might not be a WR after all. I'm moving him to TE on that roster I just posted a little while ago.

So looking like he is our next Delanie Walker?

I really like this signing, at the very least with his physical abilities he should be able to contribute on special teams. He also has pretty high TE3 potential, that would give us a solid weapon in the case of an injury, or even just to keep players fresh.

Wow, I totally called it (not that it was hard, but still). I like this move a lot more now; I think he has good size and speed to pull a Delanie type role (leaving McDonald to potentially be more of a VD type and take over for him and what he does when the time comes along with playing a little more in the slot).

I am going to say that Harper has struggled to catch the ball for the hawks all throughout the preseason. Of course, all this means is that he'll fit right in with our group of tight ends if he doesn't fix it. I mean, I love our guys, but Chris Carter type hands they do not have lol

Yep, Crabtree was our only natural pass catcher last year. I mean Moss has good hands as well, but we didn't make him a focal point of our offense. Walker and Davis on the other hand? My goodness Laughing .

If he is taking Walkers old role I hope he has better hands. How does he fit in if we got McDonald?

Right now, he kind of doesn't. Its like the Baldwin thing; has to get up to speed, learn everything, and in Harper's case, learn the ins and outs of the position. We have them there if needed, but hopefully it doesn't get so bad that we will ever actually need them. I'd be shocked if he was active on game days at all this season. Eventually though, I think the idea is to have McDonald slide in for VD once VD is gone, and have Harper slide into the H-back role, and then of course have a blocking third tight end.
