Quote:
Geno Smith is expected to be the Jets' Week 1 starter at quarterback.
Mark Sanchez's shoulder injury -- which was Rex Ryan's fault for playing him behind the Jets' backup offensive line in the third preseason game -- decided this camp battle. Smith hinted to reporters Thursday that the Jets' coaching staff has told him he will get the nod against the Bucs. Based on Smith's preseason play, Tampa Bay's defense will be a recommended Week 1 streamer.

Laughing Even the writers for rotoworld manage to jab at the jets. Jeez

But really, this is unfortunate. Sanchez is probably better and Smith is a project that isn't ready yet.

Matt Simms went 33 of 44 for 285 yards today against the Eagles back-ups and they signed Graham Harrell. Greg McElroy is also on the roster but he's apparently injured.

Sims might be better than Geno at this point actually.

You can't start him over the guy you drafted in the early 2nd. The New York media would eat that franchise alive. (Like they haven't already) Laughing

Well yeah, but not like Rex ever let the media decide who he's starting at QB in the past.

Draft status should be irrelevant once you enter the league, especially if your'e getting outperformed. Its not like a 2nd round is extremely valuable anyway. Sure you'd like those guys to pan out, but its not going to set a franchise back if you miss on one.

Exactly. Sanchez is hurt, they don't have much of a choice. As bad as Sanchez is, he's still a much better QB than Geno. If Geno ends up starting the whole season, the Jets will be in contention to draft Clowney.

It's not nor do you give up on a guy like Smith because of a bad preseason game.

Some of you guys are overreacting hard to a pre-season game. In his first game, he looked pretty solid against the Lions. He made nice reads, showed good pocket presence and made the smart throws. In the Giants game he obviously had his struggles but you have to look past the box score. He made some rookie mistakes which is to be expected, but he showed a very nice deep ball and some really nice touch on some throws. He's a rookie QB, you got to take the good with the bad. Throw him into the fire, the Jets have low expectations and he won't be expected to take this team anywhere this year.

Precisely what I was thinking. He's obviously not ready for the NFL and ideally you'd bench him until he was, but benching him in favor of a UDFA who has a much lower ceiling and wasn't drafted to be given the shot to be your franchise QB is just terrible coaching.

Benching him behind a veteran backup, or last years starter who probably should be the backup is one thing. Benching him behind a UDFA who is lucky to be on an NFL roster is a totally different ballgame.

Sanchez isn't an option, your only other option is Geno Smith, it's really not a debate at all. That's what you have to do.

And this is coming from someone who is FAR from a Smith supporter. I don't like the kid nor do I think he'll ever be starter material.

I agree Smith should start if he is ready to start. You can also create a disaster of a situation if you prematurely start him. Does Smith's play alone, not the others around him, warrant him starting. If I am the Jets I tread lightly and not rush throwing him in there too soon. Has Smith truly won the job or he is starting by default?

Did Kaepernick earn the job or did he get his chance based on an Alex Smith injury? What about Tom Brady?

I don't think he'll turn out like either of them, I think he'll flop, but the point remains. Not all guys who get a chance to start earn it, and just because they haven't earned it didn't mean they can't make the most of it or they shouldn't get that opportunity.
