2014 NFL Draft in a nutshell:

Round 1: 1 pick
Round 2: 1-2 picks*
Round 3: 1-3 picks+
Round 4: 1 pick
Round 5: 1 pick
Round 6: 1 pick
Round 7: 3 picks

*= dependant on pick from Kansas City
+= dependent on pick from Kansas City + Comp pick for Goldson

We could be looking at 12 picks at least this draft.

No space for a decent vet and get something for him and he gets a shot with a team that wants him. Double win. Good business but simply "dust in the wind" in football perspective... Good luck 98!

1 - Lemonier making his presense felt already

2 - Good for Parys. I wasn't his biggest fan, but I appreciate guys who have given their all for the team

3 - Disappointed with how little we got for him. 7th rounders hardly ever make a team and rarely turn into decent players and Parys is a solid, experienced vet who's been playing very well in preseaason so far. But we dumped his salary and got a pick, and opened up a spot so we can hurry Lemonier along in his development. So all is good.

I hope Cam Johnson doesn't make the roster. He hasn't looked all that spectacular and his roster spot could easily go to a handful of guys that would have a better chance to play/develop (guys like Grey, Jacobs, Ventrone, Morris, Cooper, Jerod-Eddie, Purcell, McDermott), or even a vet like Collie/Osgood/Hawkins.

I mean, we only kept 3 OLBs last year, why keep 5 this?

Just out of curiosity, what is it that you see in Ventrone? To me he offers nothing to our team except for someone who can run down the field and cover kicks which a guy like Marcus Cooper could easily do.

Ventrone has been Andy Lee's personal protector on punts (the starting protector at that). Seems like a guy that has a decent chance of sticking around for Special Teams work.

We save 1.3 million, we can roll that cap space over to next year to help re-sign kaep.

Anyone know how much cap space we have this year and next?

I like the trade. Wish they could have gotten more for him, but it was reported thatnhe was going to be cut, so why would a team over pay? Parys was a good Niner. He was a pro. He just did his job day in and day out at a level that was effective in the league.

Im just glad they were able to get something for him and in turn they get younger and save Kaep space........see what I did there.

I think after this trade, SF is sitting under the cap approximately 8.5 mil.

Next year... not so sure.

Does the cap limit go up next year?

Isn't Iupati's contract up at the end of this season as well? Does anybody see either him or Kaep getting the tag?

I think it really depends on how Kaep performs this year, I think the expectation is he puts up MVP Numbers, which wouldn't surprise me one bit. However, if he comes out and completely sucks, I see him getting the Tag and Iuapati getting the long term extension. That said, I fully expect the former in which case Iuapati will probably get tagged two years in a row.

I still have the utmost faith in our FO to make something work.

Edit:

Thoughts on the trade: Really solid. Parys was average AT best. The amount of love he's receiving now that he's gone is kind of surprising, especially on reddit. I always thought he was the weak link on our past defenses.

Cap space isn't much according to NCH but it still includes people on the roster who will be cut by next week.

There is still speculation over the cap growth, but the smart money is on a small and gradual growth each year. From wise and knowledgeable sources like the Patriots owner (Kraft).. the belief is that the 2014 cap limit will not grow drastically. So, we're probably talking about a small growth of 4 to 5 million per year.
