I don't think it was dumb.

Turner has played well. Better than most expected on this forum. Velasco essentially was beaten out and was gonna be too expensive of a backup when they had similar options.

Velasco was the best we had on the interior last year. I think that made him "better" than he was in some eyes. I liked him, but not shocked he was let go.

Argument can be made about him being better than Spencer, but apparently Spence played close enough that Velasco was expendable. Especially with Schwenke being able to play OG/C too.

So I think it ranked Turner, Schwenke, Spencer/Velasco. No need to pay $2 million for a 3rd interior guy.

Still no explanation for Spencer. He looked awful at guard and center this preseason. Absolutely terrible.

Explanation i saw tweeted was Spencer played about the same level and he was cheaper than Velasco.
I would think if we had a trusted player other than Wimbley. He would be gone too.
Spencer played at the same level just like Amano was the best option at center for those three (?) years. As much as I feel like I should sit back and trust our coaches when it comes to interior lineman, I still just can't understand it. Spencer is just a bad football player.

It essentially is because of money but that isn't making sense because Velasco is a FA anyway after this year. Maybe opening up center battle for Schwenke.

Oh well, Schwenke is almost certainly the future at center anyways. Hopefully Velasco catches on with some NFC team so I can still root for him.

Is Chicago still an OL disaster? I know Long had a good preseason, but they've had a lot of issues for years. I could cheer for Velasco in Chicago.

A bit overboard. He was going to be essentially the last G/C on the roster, why pay double for it? In a good scenario Velasco (or his replacement) would not play unless injury. It's certainly not the end of the world.

Never said it was the end of the world. He's certainly better than Spencer and his contract means nothing considering it's up after the season anyway.

Exactly right. Velasco was making too much for his role on the team. OL don't alternate like most other positions do. It would essentially take 2 serious injuries to get him in the starting lineup. If Spencer was playing at essentially the same level, then be it (I'll admit I didn't watch any preseason games past the 1st half, and none of the last game).

Wimbley on the other hand, is the best pass rusher we have, and will still be playing an important role on the team. Morgan is the best all around DE, RoPit is the best against the run, but Wimbley will still get plenty of crucial playing time as the pass rush specialist.

Thoughts on DE/LB Scott Solomon? He was claimed by the Jets.

Can be a good rusher. Not sure how he would do as a OLB in a 3-4 but I always thought he had talent. Just didnt fit in out bigger DE approach

With the release of Velasco, the path is set for the rise of my boy "Big Nasty" Swank Dawg to starting OC by this time next year. Laughing I hope Velasco does not sign with Denver and plays on the team with fivehead. Brick wall

All the rest of the cuts I am cool with. I hoped to stash Doyle on the PS, but oh well you win some and you lose some. At least they could keep Mooney & Charles on the PS. Well I am off to prep for my (2) fantasy drafts. Happy Labor Day, Titania. It's Steeler week, lets get that GDT up gents. Dancing

We tried to convert him to a LB this offseason. Just didn't seem comfortable there.

Can be a situational player and come in to rush the QB.
