Can't say I am surprised at any of those. I wonder who will be the next five?

Why Baker and not Hill?

Not that any would make the 53, anyway....

Not cuts, but designations:

chargers.com wrote:
Cornerback Steve Williams (pectoral) from California-Berkeley and defensive tackle Byron Jerideau (shoulder) from South Carolina were placed on Reserve-Injured.

chargers.com wrote:
Linebacker Melvin Ingram (knee) was placed on Reserve-Physically Unable to Perform (PUP). The move means Ingram, the teamís first-round choice in 2012, will miss at least the first six weeks of the season. He is eligible to begin practicing any time after Week 6 through Week 11, and the team will have a 21-day window from the day he begins practicing to either add him to the active roster or have him remain on Reserve-PUP through the end of the season.

3 more to go before tomorrow afternoon

I wish they would cut Sorensen so he can get picked up and start elsewhere. Smile

A couple thoughts on the cuts so far:

It's exciting that Melvin Ingram might come back, and as early as midseason. But, it leaves me wondering, was his ACL tear somehow less severe than other ACL tears that are keeping players out for the whole season?

It seems strange that the Chargers are waiting to cut the last few players before the deadline. They are at 78 right now, and need to get down to 75 by sometime tomorrow. This makes me think that there are financial factors at work and that they might be working on making a move. Looking at the NFLPA Top 51 report, the Chargers' cap space has dropped from $3.1-something-M to $3.0-something-M. That likely means that they got Marshall on a one-year vet min deal, which is sweet considering that other teams were interested in him.

However, not all of that cap space is going to be available. After the final roster countdown, everybody counts against the cap. That means all 53, players on IR (correct me if I'm wrong here, pretty sure though), practice squad members, and prorated (per-game) salary for anyone signed to replace an IR'd player. On top of that comes any contract extensions that make use of this year's cap, like for signing bonuses given if/when they extend Donald Butler (and possibly Cam Thomas and Rinehart). This is why I've mentioned Starks, Royal, and Clary all being on the bubble.

I think we can all agree that at least one player will end up on the 53-man roster who isn't currently with the team. But, the financial aspect might limit their trade options, and could mean the coaching staff feels pressure to part with a player they would rather keep (Royal? Clary?).

Looks like we're hiding DePalma and Willie away with mysterious injuries rather than risk them getting snatched off the practice squad

That's good news for Royal. It definitely paves the way for him to make the roster.

This could mean Meachem is staying....

That's true. The thing that made me think that Royal would make the team is that in Floyd's absence we've seen Royal run with the 1s while Meachem was still relegated to the 3s. That makes me think that even if Meachem is on the roster that he'll be inactive on gameday unless there's a string of injuries. However, that scenario does have the benefit of allowing another backup to be active to benefit the special teams unit. And, not paying a #5 WR (with Meachem as a sunk cost) is a corner-cutting move for the cap.

We financially cannot get rid of Meachem without cutting more players.

That's not true.

http://overthecap.com/explaining-the-june-1st-designation/

Quote:
After June 1 the NFL changes the way the acceleration works. After June 1st only the current years expense remains on the books after the player is released. The balance accelerates onto the following years salary cap.

That means that Meachem's guaranteed salary and prorated (2013-only) portion of his signing bonus count against this year's cap regardless of whether he's on the roster. The remaining prorated parts (2014 and 2015) of his signing bonus don't hit the cap until next year, also regardless of whether he's cut. So, it breaks down like:

2013: $6.875M (salary + 2013-only signing bonus portion)
2014: $3.75M (2014 and 2015 signing bonus portions)

...whether he's on the roster this year and inevitably cut in March, or whether they cut him now.

Wasn't sure they'd do it or not but I'm glad they did. Roster spots are too valuable to just have someone taking up a spot who doesn't have a future with the team anyways. It definitely hurts financially but this is just another step at cleaning up AJ's mess.
