Starters unlikely to play as many minutes per usual
Quote:
With the Ravens opening the regular season on a Thursday, the players will have less time to recover compared to most years, which could impact the number of snaps the starters get.

“We may not take as many reps as we normally do in a third preseason game,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said.

Game info
Where: M&T Bank Stadium
When: August 22, 2013- 8:00 PM EST
TV: WBAL (NBC) and ESPN

Competitions
Settled
1. OC, Gradkowski looks to have separated from Shipley.
2. DL, Chris Canty- Haloti Ngata- Arthur Jones... this ones a wrap.
3. ILB, Daryl Smith
4. TE, Dickson

Unsettled
1. ILB, Josh Bynes has a starting job- for now. Can Arthur Brown still surpass him before the season?
2. CB, Corey Graham vs. Jimmy Smith, Graham has the edge for now.
3. WR, Torrey Smith and then chaos. Position unsettled.
4. S, Elam has seen plenty of playing time at safety, but if he doesn't start, what's his role?
5. TE, Clark vs Shianco vs Bajema vs Furstenburg

Most interesting matchup?
Ryan Kalil vs Haloti Ngata- Kalil has been one of the better centers in the game. Ngata gets tested by a probowl level center. With this being the last dress rehearsal, players should play with increased focus. Ngata has done well so far in the preseason, but can he be the dominating NT presence we've hoped he'd be? It's only preseason and he'll likely only see a series or two, but all the more reason to ball out when in there.

So any last thoughts on these competitions? Who gets cut? How do the positions round out? Will the TE/WR positions look settled after this game? Or will no one actually WIN the job? Thoughts?

I want to see newly acquired Delone Carter solidify his spot as the #3 running back, because personally I don't think Rainey, Berry, or Allen are good RB's at all.

I also wanna see one of our freaking WR's step up and make themselves a case for being the #2 WR.

And lastly, I want to see how our first team defense plays against Cam and the read option.

If Aaron Mellette hauls in another TD, can we give him the #2/or #3 spot?

Maybe if he has more than just TD receptions.

Why? It's how Torrey Smith started his career... with just TD receptions. I'd think that would put Mellette in fine company. Wink

Don't forget he also drew a huge PI that led to the Doss TD against the Falcons. If he plays well this week i say go with him at least he has shown something other than laquan nobody has shown anything in that battle and most of laquan's contributions came from special teams

Hopefully Mellette gets to run with the 1's tonight so that we can see if he can generate separation and look dangerous against real defensive players. Would be hugely helpful in terms of clearing up the WR corps a bit ahead of the start of the season.

At this point that's the only competition I'm really hugely interested in. If Flacco looks to Stokley as his new white guy BFF in the receiving core with Pitta out and completes some passes over the middle to him, that would be great, too. I'll also want to see how Dallas Clark looks running in a competitive game in a Ravens uniform for the first time and to see how Elam/Brown can build off of last week's strong showings. Even if neither are 'starters' right off the bat I don't think the distinction will matter a huge amount and I still expect them both to see some significant snaps when we head to Denver.

I think the starters will definitely see more than a series or two. We have 2 weeks until the opener. Our offense especially needs a full half.

I only mentioned Haloti Ngata likely seeing a few series. I can imagine our offense will see plenty of snaps... though I'd hope Torrey isn't in there any longer than he needs to be.

But Ngata has been injury prone, the last thing we need is for him to get injured in a preseason game. I think he'll see a quarter of action at most- especially with us already having both Brandon Williams and Terrence Cody as capable backup options.

I'd also expect Webb and Yanda to both be pulled from the game earlier than the other starters as well. I can't imagine Webb getting more than half a quarter and Yanda probably a quarter. Definitely wouldn't want to set back his shoulder in anyway.

Laughing

For some reason I'm just a bit more skeptical about Mellette than I was about Smith. Of course I don't really favor any of the other options over him either. It sounds like Stokley is about a lock to make the team so if we're assuming they only keep 6 receivers then there's 5 that have to go.

Marlon Brown
Rashaad Carter
Tandon Doss
Jacoby Jones
Aaron Mellette
Gerrard Sheppard
Torrey Smith
Brandon Stokley
Tommy Streeter
Deonte Thompson
LaQuan Williams

I'm guessing Brown makes the practice squad, Carter and Sheppard are nothing more than camp fodder, and Streeter gets cut or suffers some mysterious injury so he's placed on IR. I assume Williams is mostly safe because of his special teams ability. Not only did they just lose a good special teams player in Reed but also Ayanbadejo earlier this season. The last cut from the group of Doss, Mellette, and Thompson is difficult. Maybe they just end up keeping them all. Think

Anyways, as for the game tonight I just hope to see some of the young players throughout the roster get a chance at playing with the first team and against the opposing first team to give us an idea of how talented they actually are. On defense I'm looking for Elam especially. I'm not too worried about who gets playing time for the guys in the front seven since there's a lot of rotation that goes on there anyways. That's not usually the case when it comes to safeties though. I'd really prefer not having Ihedigbo start.

this is how I see the WR position shake out ( if Mellette does well/ continues to impress) :

Marlon Brown PS
Rashaad Carter cut
Tandon Doss # 5 wr
Jacoby Jones #3 wr ( KR/PR)
Aaron Mellette #2 wr
Gerrard Sheppard cut
Torrey Smith #1 wr
Brandon Stokley #4 wr/slot ( 3rd down role)
Tommy Streeter IR
Deonte Thompson PUP
LaQuan Williams #6 wr ( special teams)

As you can see, IMO I think we will carry 6 wr this season.

Right now, those are the six guys I'd keep. Williams shows more on ST than the others, and might be needed more now Reed is gone.

Smith and Jones are obviously locks, and I reckon Stokley is as well, providing he's not suddenly lost all his ability over the summer. He'll be a big 3rd down guy.

So Mellette and Thompson as the last two. I guess it depends on what we see from Mellette tonight, but I think they'll be looking for reasons to keep him, and I think that he'll provide them, as long as the ball goes his way.

Thompson is probably there by virtue of his training camp performances prior to the pre-season games. But unless he's hurt enough to go on PUP, I think he makes the roster.

No Doss? Yeah, he's not done much of anything outside of the practice field.

I know the starters are due to play for much of the first half tonight, but I'd only put Torrey in for a couple of series, to try and get the most out of the other guys getting reps with Joe and the starting O-line.

Much like Mancunian, this is who I would keep. Tandon Doss has shown nothing. Not in games, not in preseason, nothing, ahead of the others and Deonte has a future both as a return specialist and potential at WR with his speed.

I have that same feeling. I actually just filled out the "Pick the 53" contest thing on BaltimoreRavens.com, but I did in fact go with Doss as well (for 7 WRs) despite my best efforts not to. My reason being that he provides, at the least, sure hands that we may miss with Pitta and Clark/Stokley might not make up for that enough. He's also our most experienced WR of the others (excluding Smith and Jones), even if that isn't saying much. Plus he can handle punt return duties as well. I just don't see them letting him go just yet.

I doubt we get rid of Doss. I think the most likely scenario for him- he develops an injury and is either put on the PUP or IRed. With Doss' injury history, I could easily envision some "ankle issue" that lands him on the PUP. That way we can keep track on how our WR situation looks, yet still bring Doss back if injuries or lack of production plague the unit (not that he's likely to fix the latter).

In terms of Streeter, he's done. No IR, no nothing. At best I see PS, but he really hasn't shown anything and doesn't seem to have the attitude of a "Raven". He'll probably just be let go.

My projected WR depth would likely go:
1. Torrey Smith
2. Jacoby Jones (outside receiver)
3. Brandon Stokley (slot option)
4a. Aaron Mellette (outside and slot, specialize on short/intermediate packages. Redzone option.)
4b. Deonte Thompson (outside deep threat for when Smith/Jones tire)
6. LaQuan Williams (special teams)

IR- Tandon Doss
PS- Marlon Brown
--------------

That said, it certainly wouldn't surprise me if Williams were cut and Doss made the team. Between guys like Juszczyk, Elam, and a few of the other young faces, we seem to have some nice special teams producers. Obviously Williams presents a leader to those units and he comes cheap, but with how unsettled the WR position is from 2nd to bottom, getting rid of a higher picked player might be difficult to do... even if only for the first six weeks of the season.
