If they were both first year players, I'd be inclined to keep Thielen over Burton.

Why?

Just based on Burton's work as a rookie. He's done a good job of developing since then though. That's why I have him on the roster and Thielen on the PS.

Stephen Burton has probably won himself a job. Showing an ability to field kicks and punts, in addition to being a strong blocker. He also made some plays in the passing game, which is encouraging.

Brandon Burton also had a decent showing, I could see him and Felder pushing AJ Jefferson off the team.

If so, this leaves one WR spot on the 53 for Webb, etc.

GJ, JS, CP, JW, SB, .... ?

The sensible thing to do may be to shut down Childs on the IR/ PUP and keep another WR on the PS. I don't think the Vikings would move Webb to the PS.... he would be valuable to a team looking for a WR/QB#3.

I didn't watch / follow the game. Webb, etc. were playing with 2nd - 4th string QBs, so their performance may be 'distorted'. So, it seems likely that whichever of the 6th-9th WRs (behind the 5 I listed above ) get more PT next week with Cassel will likely be the 2-3 finalists for WR#6.

yes, i would say so. he was all over the field last night.

Burton's downfield blocking skills kept him active for 12 games last season, even though he caught only five passes for 35 yards. This year, though, if he's on the team, he might have a chance to play a bigger role in the Vikings' offense.

Burton: "I think there's a little more trust going on. With improvement, with things happening, with practice and everything, you get a comfort level with the person you're throwing the ball to. The guys are seeing me take steps forward, so they're starting to feel more comfortable throwing the ball to me."

Not to take anything away from Burton, but Aromashadu, Jenkins, and Harvin are no longer in front of him.

Sure, GJ and CP were added in the offseason. But the other WRs were 'thinned', allowing him more chances. It's good to see he's taken advantage of it. Adding to receiving and blocking skills his versatility in returning kicks almost assures him the #5 WR spot.

Burton said it was simply instincts that told him to put on the brakes after catching a 15-yard in route. It turned a would-be first down into much more, as that move allowed him to slip the coverage of CB Roc Carmichael, outrun S Danieal Manning and pick up a downfield block by Jarius Wright to get the ball all the way to the 16-yard line.

On Zach Lines 61-yard touchdown reception, he gained all 61 yards after the catch, but credit Stephen Burton with getting Line into the end zone. Burton picked up a block on safety Eddie Pleasant at the Texans 40-yard line and held it for 20 yards before Line made a cut back inside that sprung him to the end zone.

I see 6 WRs being carried, including Webb and Burton. Which means id probably remove McCleod Bethel Thompson as the third QB and put him on the PS. I just dont see MBT as talented enough of a QB to remain on the roster as the third developmental guy when he can probably stick around on the practice squad and not waste a roster spot that could go to Webb (who can play QB and WR).

yep, i totally agree.

nor will MBT get snatched up from another team if he's on our practice squad.

Needed a backup tackle and don't know enough about Keith or Murphy. Kropog was with the team last year.

You don't think either of these two will make the team? Larry Dean starting at outside backer or Gerald Hodges.

Good call, I didn't look very close at who would be starting.

Does anyone else think that we should look for more depth in the secondary. Especially the cornerback position.

I wouldnt be upset if we did trade Toby. I like what Banyard and Randle bring. They've both good good speed and their deceptively tough. If we cut one of them and keep Asiata I'll be upset. Randle is the 3rd down back we've need for awhile. He'll take on any block and he can run the ball if needed.
