#colts release NT Brandon McKinney off IR with injury settlement. Never made full recovery from tearing left ACL in 2012 preseason

This brings an interesting discussion to the table. In normal circumstances placing a player on IR guarantees his contract for the year. And since McKinney is a vested veteran he didn't have to clear waivers to be placed on IR like other players have. In most cases a injury settlement means that the player only gets approx. half of his salary. It also means that if the Colts were to resign him at a later date that hey would have to wait up to approx. 6 weeks. (Same instance happened with Tim Fugger last year except he signed to Arizona's P/S prior to that time frame ending)

Now, of course the circumstances of his being placed on IR starting with this link suggest that maybe the Colts were too rash when they placed him on IR and he still feels he can play when his knee issue heals, so he asked for his release. That might also suggest that someone got into Grigson's ear about C.O. Prime's waivers that they had to quickly rescind before he was claimed (i.e. rash decision eluded to earlier)

All in all, even if C.O. Prime doesn't make the 53 man roster or the practice squad this isn't a loss as we never had an idea of what Brandon McKinney brought to the table because of his knee injury.
