http://www.indystar.com/article/20130807/SPORTS03/308070031/Source-Indianapolis-Colts-expected-add-safety

Quote:
The Indianapolis Colts are expected to sign former University of Illinois safety Ashante Williams if he passes a physical, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

The 5-9, 195-pounder split his time between linebacker and safety at Illinois, breaking into the starting lineup full time in 2012 with 78 tackles, 2.5 for losses, 1.5 sacks, 5 passes broken up and an interception.

The Colts have been hit by injuries at safety with LaRon Landry (knee), Sergio Brown (hamstring) and Joe Lefeged (undisclosed) potentially missing Sunday’s preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Williams had an often troubled career at Illinois according to a story on dailyillini.com that included a suspension for testing positive for marijuana, oversleeping for 6 a.m. workouts, arriving late for practice and bouncing on and off academic probation.

Camp Notebook Day 10

Quote:
PLAY OF THE DAY
On a night when he threw six touchdown passes, Andrew Luck teamed with T.Y. Hilton on a long throw into tight coverage. The pass caught Hilton in perfect stride, a half-step ahead of Greg Toler. It was textbook and arguably was Luck’s best deep throw of camp. Hilton had three scores on a productive evening.

PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS
Luck hit 26-of-35 passes for six touchdowns, playing sharply from start-to-finish. His first completion was on a flea-flicker to Hilton, and he ended his night with a scoring toss to Hilton in two-minute work. Luck is 195-of-286 for 19 TDs in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills in during camp.

Tonight, he hit eight different receivers, including Wayne (7) and Hilton (7) on multiple occasions. Wayne had a scoring reception from Luck.

In two-minute work to end practice, Chandler Harnish directed a field goal drive after penetrating the 10-yard line. Harnish had a spectacular completion to Jabin Sambrano on the drive. Luck then teamed with Hilton for a score on the next two-minute drive. Matt Hasselbeck suffered an end zone interception by Cassius Vaughnin the final two-minute drive.

Quote:
NEWS OF THE DAY
S-LaRon Landry (knee), S-Joe Lefeged, G-Hugh Thornton (ankle), C/G-Khaled Holmes (ankle), S-Sergio Brown (hamstring), LB-Mario Harvey (hamstring), LB-Daniel Adongo (biceps), G-Joe Reitz (burner), S-Larry Asante (shoulder, AC joint), LB-Jerrell Freeman (shoulder) and FB-Dan Moore (shoulder) missed action. Heyward-Bey’s MRI came back negative, and he is day-to-day.

Heyward-Bey was in pads and went through early drills. “(He) came out, warmed up and (we) put him through individual (drills), basically routes versus air, then pulled him back. We didn’t want to do too much today. Tomorrow is a day off. He’ll get treatment three or four times. He’ll probably get a little more on Thursday. Landry was out. (It was) nothing major. He tweaked a little bit of a knee. Nothing major. We wanted to hold him and not push him. (I) anticipate he’ll be out here Thursday ready to go.”

Quote:
After a season where he threw 627 passes, the most ever by a rookie and one of the highest totals amassed in the NFL’s 90 seasons, Luck is engaged happily in the concept.

“It’s great to hand the ball off,” said Luck. “The balance of the offense has been a lot of fun. Everybody is really buying into this sort of smash-mouth approach, and I think that’s only going to help us in the passing game, so it’s been great.”

Luck, a fancy passer, has seen this concept work. He still found time to connect on 37 touchdown passes in his final season, hitting 71.3 percent of his passes.

Hamilton will not ignore Luck’s abilities to go downfield. The blended offense with a bigger line and help from fullbacks will keep him upright and attacking.

“By no means are we going to not work on being an efficient passing team,” said Hamilton. “We want to maintain balance more than anything.

“We talked about Andrew (Luck) being a selfless player and that’s one of the things of Coach Pagano’s program. We’re going to do whatever it takes to win ballgames. He’s bought into the fact that a good running game can really open up our passing game. That was truly the formula that we used when he was in college. We just want to score points, however we can

The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agent linebacker Shawn Loiseau and undrafted free agent safety Ashante Williams. The team also waived-injured guard Justin Anderson and waived wide receiver Rodrick Rumble. If Anderson clears waivers, he will revert to the Colts’ Injured Reserve list.

Camp Notebook day 11

Quote:
PLAY OF THE DAY
Darius Butler provided the two plays of the day. Within moments of each other, Butler had two scoring interception returns. The first came off the arm of Matt Hasselbeck, then Butler intervened on a pass from Andrew Luck to Reggie Wayne. Butler has been among active secondary members having good camps. Later in practice, he defensed a pass from Luck to Coby Fleener.

PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS
Luck hit 13-of-21 passes with one interception. He completed five passes to Reggie Wayne and three to T.Y. Hilton. Luck is 208-of-307 for 19 TDs in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills in during camp.

Luck teamed with Wayne on a crisp pass across the middle with Antoine Bethea in tight coverage, and Bethea made the stop after the reception.

Butler and Vaughn have been playing great, its nice to be 4 deep at CB right now.

Quote:
NEWS OF THE DAY

No more information is available on Allen.

G-Justin Anderson (pectoral) was waived-injured and WR-Rodrick Rumble was waived. LB-Shawn Loiseauand S-Ashante Williams were signed.

WR-Darrius Heyward-Bey worked in warm-ups and in the first team drill, doing all things prescribed by the organization. CB-Teddy Williams (quadriceps), LB-Josh McNary (hamstring) and CB-Marshay Green(hamstring) went down in afternoon work.

T.Y. Hilton made a splashy introduction to Colts fans when Ryan Grigson traded up in the 2012 draft to land the Florida International speedster in the third round.

Hilton did nothing but validate the move by having one of the best rookie seasons ever by a Colts receiver.

He recorded five 100-yard outings, a club rookie mark, and his 861 yards on 50 receptions ranked second-best ever by a Colt.

A number of Colts were asked near the start of camp which teammate they expected to have a solid performance in Anderson. Many pointed a finger directly at Hilton.

Quote:
“I think T.Y. Hilton can be really special as a receiver, and I’ve been around a lot of receivers,” said 15-year veteran Matt Hasselbeck. “He’s a guy I see who could be poised to break out.”

The 13th receiver drafted last year, Hilton started breaking out early. In week three, he became the NFL’s first rookie receiver to top 100 yards when he had 113 against Jacksonville.

His second such performance (6-102, 1 TD) came against Miami, and he tied the club mark of Andre Rison with six receptions for 100 yards at New England.

Hilton set the club rookie mark by going past the plateau at Detroit, then versus Houston, and he also set a franchise record by scoring touchdowns via a reception and punt return in the same game – versus Buffalo.

Grigson cited Hilton for his aggressiveness also in hitting on coaches for tidbits during practice. He was seeking counsel for honing his craft, and he did so repetitively with Reggie Wayne as well.

Hilton said last year having Wayne at his disposal was invaluable. He said it was like having a math book with answers provided. He also said going to Wayne was like going to the library, but that he only had to walk across the locker room rather than get in a car and drive to have access to information.

Camp Notebook Day 11

Quote:
PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS
Luck hit 11-of-11 passes with two touchdowns. He completed five passes to T.Y. Hilton, one for a score. Luck is 219-of-318 for 21 TDs in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills in during camp.

A good part of the early part of practice was spent on running drills.

In red zone work, Luck hit Fleener on a scoring toss.

The practice lasted 20 minutes less than the two hours, five minutes set for the session.

NEWS OF THE DAY
TE-Dwayne Allen (foot), S-LaRon Landry (knee), S-Joe Lefeged (calf), G-Hugh Thornton (ankle), C/G-Khaled Holmes (ankle), S-Sergio Brown (hamstring), LB-Mario Harvey (hamstring), LB-Daniel Adongo (biceps), S-Larry Asante (shoulder, AC joint), LB-Jerrell Freeman (shoulder), CB-Teddy Williams (quadriceps), LB-Josh McNary (hamstring), LB-Bjoern Werner (foot) and FB-Dan Moore (shoulder) missed action.

Allen was having a second opinion on his knee, and further details of the foot injury are not known. Werner left the walk-through this morning and still could play on Sunday.

Tyler Brooke, who writes for Bleacher Report, contributes to Stampede Blue and hosts the Colts Central podcast started a hashtag about Josh Chapman #Chapnado used Chapman's twitter handle and Chapman responded that he likes it. I was actually listening to the Colts Authority podcast and just as they went off the air they mentioned this happening.

And that reminds me of an article I read the other day where they were asking Dwayne Allen about the team's nickname for Andrew Luck (Meal Ticket)

Couple things to know about us before our preseason game on Sunday

We will run a lot of plays with our no huddle. Make sure you defense is in shape
Mike Pettine isn't going to hold anything back so expects lots of blitzing
We will only play two QBs. Both rookies as Kolb is being eased back
Leodis McKelvin has been ruled out.

Should be interesting for a preseason game. The top Qb from the past two drafts are playing each other.

Quote:
Giants lose receiver Kris Adams to fractured leg

On the second play from scrimmage of the third quarter, Adams slipped on a pass thrown to him by quarterback Curtis Painter.

Adams initially made the Colts 53 man cut down last year, was cut and signed to the practice squad a week or so later. After the 2012 season the Colts opted to not resign the WR.

very good news, I was worried on that first report of 2nd opinion. Never like to hear those words, definitely when you never heard of injury before that.

BTW, I love Allen's twitter description:
