Camp Notebook Day 6

Quote:
PLAY OF THE DAY
One day after citing Peyton Manning for having weeks of practice where footballs rarely touched the ground, Andrew Luck hit 23-of-29 passes in drills against the defense. His play of the day is of the extended variety and came over three straight series when he connected on 14 straight passes (hitting seven different receivers).

PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS
Luck hit 23-of-29 passes with four touchdowns on Friday and is 129-of-193 for 12 TDs in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills in six days.

Quote:
NEWS OF THE DAY
G-Hugh Thornton (ankle), C/G-Khaled Holmes (ankle), S-Sergio Brown (hamstring), S-Antoine Bethea (wife’s child birth), WR-LaVon Brazill (abdomen), LB-Mario Harvey (hamstring), LB-Daniel Adongo (biceps) and CB-Greg Toler (concussion) missed practice. G-Joe Reitz suffered a burner.

Quote:
Luck and Wayne connected on three scores, and Luck hit Dwayne Allen once as the team worked in short-yardage and goal-line situations. Luck worked for most of the day with Vontae Davis watching, while Antoine Bethea and Greg Toler sat out.

Wayne had seven receptions from Luck, while Darrius Heyward-Bey and Stanley Havili had three.

Matt Hasselbeck scored on a keeper and hit a well-time completion to T.Y. Hilton, plus another long scoring toss to the speedster.

Daxton Swanson picked off Chandler Harnish, but Harnish teamed with Justice Cunningham on multiple occasions. In addition to hitting Cunningham for six, he did so also with Jeremy Kelley on a lob pass.

Cassius Vaughn capped a good week with another pass defensed.

Pat McAfee tried field goals of 60 and 64 yards. The second kick was wide left.

Seen something that said Ben Ijalana has been looking good so far. He is practicing as 3rd team OT but has looked much better then he did when he was used as a guard.

Hopefully he can stay healthy and make the team.

Seen some articles saying he was on the bubble.

When is first cut down day?

Pretty cool article on Griff Whalen.

I think there is a strong chance he makes the team.

He has looked just fine.

I expect big things from him and Bethea this year, actually from the whole Colts secondary. Vontae Davis has looked great, Darius Butler has really looked good. Toler had concussion, but looked pretty good while on the field.

Great article on Reggie, love this guy.

Quote:
INDIANAPOLIS – The last time Reggie Wayne missed an NFL game T.Y. Hilton was a fifth grader.

Now, Hilton is 12 years older and he calls Wayne a teammate, sitting by him in meeting rooms, constantly in his ear trying to pick the brain of a potential Hall of Famer.

“Whenever I get a chance I just make sure I tell him ‘thank you’ for just being able to have the time to be able to talk to me,” Hilton says of Wayne. “Whenever I have a question to ask him, he always answers so just to be able to have the type of guy means a lot.

Quote:
Wayne enters his 13th NFL season 32 catches shy of 1,000 for his career and has piled up 13,063 receiving yards since being drafted in 2001.

Getting ready to get the Wayne Tracker going.

Quote:
For Wayne, the 1,000-catch mark means he’s “been playing a long time” but there’s a reason that at the age of 34, the six-time Pro Bowler is still earning trips to Hawaii.

It’s the consecutive games streak that really resonates with Wayne.

“Me being able to be there each week and answering that bell is bigger than everything else, believe it or not. I take pride in that. I want to be there for the guys. When they go down in the foxhole, I want to be available to go with them.”

Wayne calls himself the “Vice President” of the Colts offense with No. 12 sitting in the Oval Office.

Quote:
The numbers began with 30 and 87.

Reggie Wayne was the 30th overall pick in the 2001 draft and the Indianapolis Colts immediately gave him jersey No. 87.

Quote:
32

Receptions needed to become the ninth player in NFL history with 1,000.

Jerry Rice is the off-in-the-distance pacesetter with 1,549 receptions. The other seven are: Tony Gonzalez (1,242 and counting), Marvin Harrison (1,102), Cris Carter (1,101), Tim Brown (1,094), Terrell Owens (1,078), Isaac Bruce (1,024) and Hines Ward (1,000).

Quote:
13,063

Career receiving yards, No. 14 in league history.

Hall of Famer Steve Largent is next at 13,089 receiving yards. If Wayne duplicates his 1,355 yards from last season he'll likely be in eighth place, 162 yards shy of Harrison.

Quote:
779

Receptions from Peyton Manning, second-most in NFL history by a QB-WR tandem. Manning and Marvin Harrison hold the record (953).

Quote:
182

Consecutive starts, the longest active streak among NFL wide receivers. Wayne, 34, has missed only three of a possible 192 regular-season games

http://forums.colts.com/index.php?/blog/258/entry-1037-darius-butler-impresses-after-week-one-in-anderson/

Quote:
During the Colts 2013 training camp, Butler has continued to make plays with several interceptions during the first week of work.
In 2012, the Colts defense forced just 15 turnovers and Butler said that is something they are harping on in camp.
The secondary has been particularly active early on getting their hands on numerous balls.
“We could be the best in the league if we come out, work every day, feed off each other,” Butler said of the secondary. “We’ve got a lot of years back there at the safeties and me, Vontae (Davis) and Greg (Toler), we all came in in ‘09 and have been playing some good ball. The more we work together, the better we can play.”
Butler joined the Colts during the bye week last season and was a critical pickup during the Colts 11-5 year.
Colts defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said Butler has continued to play off his success last season and is currently the team’s nickel cornerback

Quote:
“You saw him last year do that. He did it a couple times in the first couple of practices we had,” Manusky said of Butler’s playmaking ability. “He has great ball skills. He’s competing just like all the other players are, but I love him.”
It appears the Colts have found some quality depth at the cornerback position which is a welcoming sight with not one corner on this year’s roster having been on the team prior to OTAs in 2012.

Really like Butler, very happy we brought him back.

Going to be a great NB for us.

Really is crazy, he has been the model of consistency for us, I hope he plays longer than his contract is for.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/indianapolis-colts/reggie-wayne/

He is owed $7.5m this year and $6.5m next season.

I hope we sign him to a 3 year extension next season, I would like to see him end up #2 on these all time receiving list.

I think Reggie can play a good 4-5 more years, question will be is that what he wants to do? I dont really know how much stats mean to Reggie, but if they mean something he could really do some great things.

968rec 13,063yds

if he played 5 more seasons and stayed healthy he would need to put up these kind of numbers to catch or almost catch the unreachable Jerry Rice numbers.

Rec:
1549 catches-968 catches = 581/5= 116 catches a season, so would probably need 6 more seasons(including this one, would be 40). 581/6= 97 catches a year.

Both seem pretty tough to obtain.

Although with Reggie's work ethic, I could see him playing till he was 40, and producing some great numbers.

Rec yds:
22,895rec yds Shocked - 13,063= 9,832yds/5 =1966 yds per season. 9,832/6= 1638 per season....

neither is happening Laughing

What a beast Jerry Rice was.

Reggie Wayne is only 2,871yds behind T.O. for #2 on rec yards list.
Reggie Wayne is only 274 receptions behind Tony Gonzalez(which will gain more this year) Reggie will probably decrease this lead a little by end of year though(between his catches and Gonzalez catch totals this year).

Anyway it goes hopefully he plays at least 3 more seasons, will be nice to see his final numbers.

I can easily see Reggie get 90-100 catches this year, and 1100-1300yds.

Edit: There is some guys that will be challenging these numbers 7-10 years from now(AJohnson,CJ,Fitzgerald, Witten)

Camp Notebook Day 7

Quote:
PLAY OF THE DAY
Cassius Vaughn continued to have a good camp and spiced it Sunday with a scoring interception return of a pass by Andrew Luck that was intended for Vick Ballard. Vaughn made the play and scored down the sidelines.

PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS
Luck hit 20-of-31 passes with one touchdown and interception and is 149-of-224 for 13 TDs in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills in during camp.

He teamed with T.Y. Hilton for the score and connected with Reggie Wayne six times. Hilton had four receptions.

Quote:
“We feel really good about our situation at corner,” said Pagano last week. Obviously, Vontae (Davis), the way he ended the 2012 season, the plays he was making, you see him out here playing tight coverage, making plays every day.”

Quote:
Pagano says there is a swagger. Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky used the same term, too, in describing the ground the organization has covered.

“It’s night and day compared to last year,” said Manusky. “This group (the defense) has that confidence that they understand the call now and they’ve repped it 50, 60, 100 times as opposed to it being the first time last year. We have a swagger you definitely want to see a defense have.”

“Yeah we are just having fun,” said Davis. “We love being around one another. Coach Pagano preaches family and we go out every day as if it’s just fun.

“In meetings, Coach Pagano sits by me all the time, so I am very confident. To have the head coach as the defensive back coach in the past, it is very helpful and it’s just very different as far as coming in during the season.”

Quote:
NEWS OF THE DAY
Two injuries of note happened in the afternoon. Darrius Heyward-Bey suffered a left knee sprain, while fullback Dan Moore had a sprain the AC joint in his right shoulder. The extents of the injuries are not known.

G-Hugh Thornton (ankle), C/G-Khaled Holmes (ankle), S-Sergio Brown (hamstring), LB-Mario Harvey (hamstring), LB-Daniel Adongo (biceps), G-Joe Reitz (burner) and CB-Greg Toler (concussion) missed practice.

Larry Asante and Kavell Conner crashed into each other on a long pass attempt to Justice Cunningham by Hasselbeck. Conner and Asante were all over Cunningham prior to the collision. Asante stayed down a moment before getting up. Both finished practice.

Sucks DHB got hurt, hope its not too serious.

Quote:
The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agent fullback Robert Hughes.

Dan Moore has a sprained right AC joint (shoulder), not sure how long he'll be out. Hughes was the Colts FB last year but only for like 5-6 plays a game. This year that is likely to increase with Havili.

Camp Notebook Day 8

Quote:
The last thing Chuck Pagano saw in the regular season is the first thing he wants to see Sunday against Buffalo – physical domination.

Indianapolis closed out Houston last year, 28-16, with a 15-play, 63-yard drive that consumed 9:46 off the game clock. The club rushed 14 times, converted three third downs and drained the remaining time despite two Houston timeouts and the two-minute warning.

“Glorious,” said Pagano of the drive, one that bordered on a crusade against a talented defense.

Quote:
“To me, it all starts up front. In order to run the football, you’re going to have to come off the ball and knock those guys off the line of scrimmage and open up holes. That takes some nastiness, some aggression, a certain amount of physicality to do that. I think we got the right guys to have a more physical offensive line.”

None of the 17 linemen in camp weighs less than 300 pounds. The total weight of the group (5,394) averages out to 317 pounds per man, 14 pounds more than the average-sized lineman Indianapolis used in Super Bowl XLIV.

Two main components, Gosder Cherilus and Donald Thomas, arrived via free agency, while left tackle Anthony Castonzo is one of two remaining linemen who started 16 games last season.

Quote:
PLAY OF THE DAY
In red zone drills, Andrew Luck hit Reggie Wayne on an in-pattern with tight coverage by Vontae Davis. It appeared Davis would have the snare, but Wayne is Wayne and Luck is Luck. On the next play, Davis defended a coffin-corner pass in the end zone from Luck to Wayne. Two good plays, three good players.

PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS
Luck hit 20-of-27 passes, including his first 10 attempts, of the afternoon. He is 169-of-251 for 13 TDs in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills in during camp. Today, he hit seven different receivers, including Wayne (6) and T.Y. Hilton (4) on multiple occasions.

Kerwynn Williams, having a good camp, had a reception with the first-team. Luck and Hilton teamed early in practice on a long pass with Darius Butler in tight coverage. Butler later defended a pass to Wayne.

Quote:
NEWS OF THE DAY
G-Hugh Thornton (ankle), C/G-Khaled Holmes (ankle), S-Sergio Brown (hamstring), LB-Mario Harvey (hamstring), LB-Daniel Adongo (biceps), G-Joe Reitz (burner), S-Larry Asante(shoulder, AC joint), LB-Jerrell Freeman (shoulder), FB-Dan Moore (shoulder) and WR-Darrius Heyward-Bey (knee sprain) missed action. Heyward-Bey’s injury is not serious enough to keep him from viewing practice and standing up to do so. CB-Greg Toler returned to work today after missing a few days with a concussion.

Greg Manusky said today against Buffalo some veterans will play fewer snaps than other players. A target might be one series-to-10 plays. Manusky said Freeman is in place at one inside spot and the other should be used by Kelvin Sheppard, Kavell Connerand maybe Josh McNary. Manusky stressed playing as a unit and for each other is the goal.

Quote:
MANUSKY SAYS (On saying the defense had been winning early drills in camp because the offense still was in its installation mode and now if things were changing)
“We always win (laughs).

The team has a night practice tonight.
