It was only a matter of time. He had to recover from his injury first before they could release him.

It is probably because he is the one Bronco without a substance abuse problem. They figured he was too normal.

Why now? They could have cut him in training camp. Are we shedding salary to sign another player?

Good news, but not unexpected. Sounds like they figure they've got the solution at MLB with one of Irving, Johnson or Stewart.

Gives Mays a better chance of catching on somewhere by releasing him this early.

I feel like it's going to be Stewart day 1

Well, I will be utterly disappointed if it is not Irving. Still waiting for that 1st round grade given to him by Parcells to pan out.

Its a classy move to release a veteran before camp. I bet they were trying to negotiate a restructure of his contract and it went nowhere, so they let him go.

This classy move is surprising coming from a team that has lacked it of recent.

Mays is a good example of the changing role of the MLB.

He was good defending against runs but bad against passes. Had he been born a few decades earlier, he could have been a star in 1980s NFL but today the MLB position has changed to be mainly pass defense with some run support.

Just not worth the $4 million salary. He would be a really great pickup for some team on the vet minimum.

Great guy; wish him the best of luck.

I'm not sure I would call him a good run defender. He's a better run defender but that isn't saying a whole hell of a lot because he is a lost cause in coverage.

Good guy, really a better fit for the TED role in a 3-4. Should not be a starter anywhere though.

One, there was no way Mays was going to make the final 53 at $4m so why not cut him now, pay him the $500k of that which is guaranteed, and have some cap flexibility should there be any injures in camp.

Secondly, knowing he wasn't going to make the team, Elway did the classy thing by releasing him before camps across the league opened to give Mays a good opportunity to make someone else's roster.

Pretty much everyone expected this when we signed Bradley who came cheaper.

Now that they cut Mays they should sign Mark Andersen for the vet minimum.

The writing was on the wall here. Joe Mays seems like a truly good dude so I hope he catches on somewhere and does well.
