I think it was Louis Friend that pointed out he would receive retirement benefits if he was rostered for 3 years. I am assuming he has now fulfilled that obligation. What a class move by the organization, absolute upmost respect for Mayhew and the rest of the FO for this move. Kudos. _________________

Yeah, I saw it somewhere, can't remember where now though. Still a sad day for this young man. |

Detroit Lions announce that they have released RB Jahvid Best
Quote: |
Allen Park, Mich.— The Detroit Lions announced today that they have released RB Jahvid Best.
RB Jahvid Best
Best played in 22 games (15 starts) for the Lions after being drafted by the team in the first round (30th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He saw action in all 16 games as a rookie in 2010, but was limited to only six games in 2011. Best was placed on Physically Unable to Perform on August 27, 2012 and missed the duration of the 2012 season.
“Jahvid is as fine a person and professional as I have ever worked with,” Lions Executive Vice-President of Football Operations and General Manager Martin Mayhew said. “He was the consummate teammate and always did everything asked of him. We wish Jahvid the very best in all his future endeavors and have no doubt that he will be successful in whatever path he chooses.”
“I want to thank the Detroit Lions organization for drafting me and giving me an opportunity to fulfill my dream and play in the National Football League,” Best said. “My time as a member of the Lions was a very special time in my life. My teammates, the members of the organization, the Lions fans and the people of Detroit will hold a special place in my heart. I’ll always be a Lion.” |

Yeah I believe that kicked in June 1st 2013. That's basically why they held on to him when it's been clear for a while that he's done. _________________

I get the sentiment, but I just don't think he has enough expertise to come back as a valuable coach for us. He just wasn't in the NFL as long as a guy lack Backus who we brought on as an assistant after he retired. I could see him going back as an assistant coach for Cal or somewhere else in college and work his way back into the NFL though. _________________

That doesn't mean much. They could've put him on PUP to start the season like they did last year. |

I'm not sure the NFL is going to let that happen. |

I really hope Jahvid can find peace and a sense of purpose outside of football.
He's had a rough go in football since his last year of college. I hope he was shut down early enough that he doesn't suffer significant affects from the concussions. He's young and has a full life ahead of him.
I wish him good health and success outside of football. _________________

I was thinking the same thing. He seems like he could probably find work as a RB coach at a college somewhere. _________________
