Detroit Lions will have options with cap space created by Matthew Stafford's contract extension
Quote: | ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions suddenly have a little bit of money to spend.
Prior to signing quarterback Matthew Stafford to a three-year extension on Wednesday, the Lions had $1.9 million in cap space. Stafford's new deal reportedly lowers his 2013 cap number from $20.8 million to $17.8 million, giving the Lions an extra $3 million to work with this offseason. |
Quote: | While a handful of intriguing free agents are still available, such as offensive tackle Eric Winston and wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, Stafford suggested Detroit could simply take a wait-and-see approach. |
Quote: | "We need to look to that young nucleus of talent that we have, some of those guys who are entering the last years of their rookie contracts, and begin to look to the future and extending those guys as well," Lewand said. |
What would you like to see the Lions do with the extra cap room they now have?
Is there a specific player or two on the market you'd like them to target?
Is there a current player on the team you want them to extend with that money? _________________

I feel like Eric Winston would be a good signing. Could come in and play RT right away.
On the other hand restructuring a players deal to spend more money this year to free up cap space this next off-season may also be wise. _________________

Pettigrew and Scheffler need new deals.
Maybe we see a trade for a better RT? _________________

Well I can tell what I don't want them to do. And that is re-sign the same scrubs that led us to the futility that was the Lions last year. WTH kind of garbage is Lewand talking about? _________________

We still need a competent outside receiver across from Megatron. Brandon Lloyd comes to mind as a perfect fit across from him, and if this move freed up 7 million as I have seen reported, we would have more than enough for the guy.
Outside Linebacker help, particularly I'd like to see us get a guy in there that's good on first and second down. Levy and Tulloch are great in nickel situations, which leaves me less than excited about the other side, essentially a two down position being manned by our current guys in Palmer or one of the young guys. I'd like to see us take a look at Nick Barnett.
Essentially, that's the sort of guy I'd like to see us go for, a role playing veteran who buys us a year or two at a reasonable price. They're not ancient relics with nothing left in the tank, but are not going to prevent young guys from stepping up, just making it so that they don't have to for us to be successful this season. Honestly there's not much left out there that would be an upgrade for us. Winston would, but I don't think we'll see much drop off from Gosder with what we have now. |

I'd like to see Pettigrew earn it first. _________________

I would like to see them be prudent with the money. Just because you have cap room doesn't mean you have to spend it. If they could get an extension done for Suh they could really increase their available dollars.
Take a look at the team this year and use the cap space to try and sign a difference maker in the LB core or secondary.
Having cap space also allows them to take on salary in trade scenarios. _________________

I dont know about Winston.
From what I know, the guy is a near liability in the pass game.
I still cant believe Abraham is available.
The guy has averaged something like 11 sacks the past 3 years, all being in his 30's, and with little help on the Falcons dline. Id imagine he has at least one good year left.
He's probably be a top my wish list. _________________ Team Stylish

Unless they need an upgrade due to an unforeseen injury. I would like to see them keep their cap space so that it can be carried over to next year. Unless there is a quality player that gets cut near the end of training camp (it seems to happen every year) I don't think the lions should use the cap space just because they have it. |

We could also spend none of it and roll it over _________________

If Fauria is as good as hyped (I am skeptical) we should send Scheftler to the Pats for Cannon. He could push for either RT or RG and provide great depth. _________________

Seriously, that's what I'd probably do at this point. Then with hopefully Suh re-signing, we could potentially open up some cap space to sure up problem areas in next year's F/A- probably being secondary, OL, and DE yet again. _________________ Oh no, we suck again

I do think we'll make a trade at some point though, I can feel it _________________

Roll it over into next year so we can resign Suh easier. _________________
