lmao. I've admittedly never been a Stafford fan, but he doesn't seem worth the money.

There is absolutely no reason to commit that much to him. He wasn't going to be a free agent after this year and he still hasn't solidified who he is as a player.

Smooths out some of the huge back-end cap hits over the next few years.

So 75 mill over the next five years isnt that bad. Means he will be 30 when his five year deal is over.
What are you even saying? That's like 15 M per....

That doesn't seem too bad. He had a ton of leverage with the massive rookie deal he got.

Lion fans once said they would rather have Stafford and Megatron than Aaron Rodgers and Greg Jennings(when Greg Jennings was blowing ish up in 2011). They aren't worried whatsoever.

Stafford is a borderline top 10 QB that isn't worth a block buster deal. Probably worth about 15m/year.
I doubt every Lions fan said that.... I know a few Lions posters that really wanted Greg Jennings and have been a fan of his since his WMU days. So I don't think it is a good idea to generalize a fan base like that, I hate it when it happens to us.

Yeah, when doing the math $15m per really isn't a bad deal for the Lions.

They got a 5 year plan now!

It'll be interesting how this works out for the Lions. If he returns to his 2011 form then $15 mil/year won't be bad at all. If he keeps putting up numbers like 2012's though, then they'll probably be regretting this come 2015. They must have quite a bit of faith in Stafford if they gave him the extension with 2 years left on his contract.

The problem was Stafford's cap hits the next couple of seasons:

2013 - $20.82 million
2014 - $19.32 million

I agree though that they could regret it if he doesn't improve over the next couple of seasons but I understand completely why they did the deal...

Eh, thats not bad. That shouldn't put the Lions in a hole down the road.

But boy, does Stafford have a chubby face. He should slim down.

I dont think Ben Roethlisberger is worth 17 Million a year so Stafford sure as hell isn't.

I think Ben is worth $17m per year. He signed his contract back in '08 for ~$13m per season. He would definitely get around $17m now.

Also Stafford is getting ~$15m per season if my math is right...

Cap Wise, Mayhew & Schwartz levered up available resources to revert to 2011 form with FA signings to fill major voids. The contract the Franchise would like to extend is Matthew Stafford's. The 1st Overall pick in 2009, Stafford reinvigorated the Franchise and helped move forward from the 2002 draft blunder- Joey Harrington 3rd Overall.

2010 2nd Overall Pick Ndamukong Suh (21.4 M) & Matthew Stafford (19.32 M), these two 2014 cap figures constitute roughly 30% of the Cap. Combined with Calvin Johnson's 13.15 M Figure, the Lions have become a victim of successful drafting. Johnson's extension was warranted, as are Stafford's & Suh's in the future. Under the previous CBA, without the rookie wage scale, top selections received astronomical salaries. Due to yearly restructuring & escalators, the cap figures have increased mightily, forcing early extensions to create space.

This could be a serious break out year for Stafford. He finally has some weapons not named Calvin on offense. I think they could be a pretty solid team that could eventually build into an elite team.

This seems like a good deal overall and if they can get some cap relief even better. Stafford is the type that is too good to replace but should get a deal done to save money when they break out. I bet the ravens wish they did flaccos deal a year sooner.
