Lions and QB Matthew Stafford are on verge on blockbuster extension that could be done as early as today, per team source.

Doesn't he have a 1-21 record vs winning teams over the past 3 years or something?

I understand wanting to keep your quarterback around, but a blockbuster deal?

I'd be a little worried if I was the Lions...

Lion fans once said they would rather have Stafford and Megatron than Aaron Rodgers and Greg Jennings(when Greg Jennings was blowing ish up in 2011). They aren't worried whatsoever.

Stafford is a borderline top 10 QB that isn't worth a block buster deal. Probably worth about 15m/year.

I doubt every Lions fan said that.... I know a few Lions posters that really wanted Greg Jennings and have been a fan of his since his WMU days. So I don't think it is a good idea to generalize a fan base like that, I hate it when it happens to us.

That stat is a little frustrating.

Stafford was drafted after the Lions were the first team to go 0-16. He didn't have a lot to work with. That, along with Mayhew's questionable drafting (poor picks, buts, injuries, etc.), a lack of a run game, a rookie HC, and a terrible defense (shaky linebacker play, almost zero secondary, lack of impact players, injuries, etc.) don't help a QB have success. He can't play both sides of the ball. He's just one piece of the puzzle.

I have no problem if the Lions give him a huge contract. To a lot of fans of other teams it might seem silly, but when's the last time the Lions had a good QB? Can you name him? In the NFL you either have a franchise QB or you don't, and if you don't have one then you're desperately looking for one.

Is Matt Stafford perfect? Absolutely not. He has a lot he can improve on. Is he better than Aaron Rodgers? No way. But, a lot of Lions fans are going to be excited. He's only 25. He has a lot of talent and tools to potentially be a top 5-ish QB one day, and he offers stability to a position that the Lions haven't been able to fill in a long, long time.

The "blockbuster" part scared me a little bit Laughing, but the #'s are actually pretty good from the early reports.

There is absolutely no reason to commit that much to him. He wasn't going to be a free agent after this year and he still hasn't solidified who he is as a player.

So 75 mill over the next five years isnt that bad. Means he will be 30 when his five year deal is over.

Not only is it a great deal on the surface, it spreads out his ludicrous cap hit over then next few years. Haters gon' hate, but this is a great move for the Lions.
