I am fine with Morgan, and I would rather lock him up now, hopefully a 5 year extension so he is here for a while, then land a stud FS next to him. I think that would help out a lot.

Dom Capers on Burnett....

"Hes made progress each year. Smart, very coachable, from a coachs standpoint you have great confidence that hes going to be accountable and hes got playmaking ability. You saw our Minnesota game out here, without those two interceptions were in a doggone dog fight. Because it was, when he made those interceptions, it was heading downhill on us. They come out the first play, Peterson broke a long one and his interception turned the game around. The other one was in the red zone, too. Both those were points off the board. I think hes at a point in terms of being your quarterback and taking over the communication and all those kinds of things, hes confident. Hes been around here for three years. He played every play last year."

Makes a lot of sense, he is someone that is probably only going to gain value and with no one locked in at FS yet locking up one position makes sense. Plus, he is part of a long list of guys hitting free agency next year, so cutting that list down really helps a lot.

Burnett is the FS.. We need someone to lay the wood next to him. Someone who makes guys fear the middle of the field and is able to punch Adrian Peterson in the mouth at the line of scrimmage.

good for Morgan... hes a guy that this team cant really chance losing since were not very top heavy at safety in general... & we'll probably get him for cheap

hes gonna be a solid guy on that back end for a long time if he can stay healthy

Love to hear this, big Burnett fan. He just turned 24 this past January so there is so much room for him to grow as a player, and he's gotten better every season it seems. He is smart, productive, and reliable(one of only 2 defensive guys in entire NFL to play every snap last year). I'm confident that if we get a more reliable Safety next to him(hopefully it's McMillian) he's going to look even better out there.

To me the bolded is the big question on this. If he needs a more relaible player next to him to have him look better, is he really worth it. The true difference makers make other players better!!! Should not be so dependent the other way.

I am a bit cautious with this possible signing. I am yet to be sold on Burnett and would like to see the next step, before making the financial comittment. I guess the trust in the staff to see Burnett's development and potential to put it all together.

Burnett is going into his fourth year - that is when a safety really comes into his own. Collins was faster, but otherwise they were both ballhawks coming out of college. Plus looking at stats of the players first three seasons Burnett's are actually better.

He already has been the top tackling safety in the NFL last year and is number two over the last two seasons. The only risk with signing Morgan long-term is an injury like Collins had.

A lot of times that is true but not always, especially when it comes to playing safety, it makes your job a hell of a lot easier with a competent counterpart. Similar situation with Matthews. As well as he's played without a consistent bookend, imagine how he would perform if he's had a Woodley/Spencer/Suggs type presence on the other side. Burnett has played well enough on his own post Nick Collins, but he's going to progress even more with an assignment sure counterpart.

Not really. Matthews hasn't had any type of presence on the other side, and all he's done is make it to four straight pro bowls, a first-team all-pro, runner-up in the DPOY voting and average 10+ sacks per year.

Zach Kruse ‏@zachkruse2 2m
Spotrac predicts #Packers S Morgan Burnett will receive a four-year, $32.1M extension with $16.6M guaranteed

Not sure if that is what I expected but it is only a little more than what I would want to pay him. Fair contract for both sides if it ends up being set up like that.

That seems like a lot. I was thinking the 5-7M range.

It would average out to be 6.4 per year if it was spread out evenly, which is just below the franchise tag number for this year. Heavy on the guaranteed side, so I guess they are looking at a front loaded contract where his cap hit will be minimal after 2 years.

edit- Actually with the old money he was already making it would be 6.72m/year.
