Quote: | Contract talks between the Dallas Cowboys and defensive end Anthony Spencer have ended, according to a source. |
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/06/25/cowboys-break-off-contract-talks-with-anthony-spencer/
Quote: | Agent Jordan Woy (Colorado Avalanche coach Patrick Roy never knows how to pronounce his name) tells Mike Fisher of 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that the Cowboys have broken off talks. Per Woy, the move makes it “most likely that [Spencer will] play 2013 on the one-year deal.’’ |
I know many of you will like this news. Spencer will most likely end up playing on this 1 year deal. A new contract would have to be reached by July 15 or he plays on the Franchise Tag until after the end of the regular season and he would become a Free Agent. _________________ "Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyways" - John Wayne |

"The Cowboys have broken..." Interesting. I figured it would be Spencer to walk first. I doubt that this is the end, but hooray beer! _________________

Now if they would only rescind the franchise tag.
though to be honest, this is the year to lock him up after these small deals other DEs have signed. I'd hate it at a 60m contract, but it could be pretty decent at a 30-40m deal. _________________

that, itself, is the problem, apparently. The Cowboys are using the other DE deals. Spencer wants the Paul Kruger deal.
I would be ok, actually, giving him the $8m a year Kruger deal, with a little more back load. I am also ok not doing so and using future cap money elsewhere. |

Get what we can out of him this year, see if one of the other guys step up and show some potential - if not, draft his replacement next season.
That way we don't overpay yet another aging player. _________________

They confirmed on radio that we will let him hit free agency after this season. _________________

If it's incentive laden I would be all for it.
As for Spencer, it would have been nice to have a player waiting in the wings to take his place next year. Looks like we will go DE is the #1 priority in 2014. _________________

He is 29, he will be hitting the dreaded 30 after this season. Get what we can from him this year and let him find a deal with someone else. We can start to get younger on defense, which isn't an issue outside of the Defensive Line. We need to start getting future prospect to play the DL, but hopefully Crawford excels this year. _________________

Good. There is absolutely no good reason to extend him now. Lets at least wait and see if he can be successful in a 4-3. Also he is going on 30 yrs old. Maybe it's best to keep him this yr and find a younger replacement next yr who is a more prototypical 4-3 end with size to stop the run as well as rush the passer. _________________ AMERICA'S TEAM and 5x SB CHAMPIONS = DALLAS COWBOYS!!!!!

I really hope Crawford can be the run stopping LE with some rush skills to boot. I'm really excited about him. Maybe he can also play some dt on nickel.
LE- Spencer
DT- Ratliff
DT- Crawford
RE- Ware
Now that's some pass rush right there in the nickel _________________ AMERICA'S TEAM and 5x SB CHAMPIONS = DALLAS COWBOYS!!!!!

I like crawford, but based off last season Hatcher is still a better pass rusher. _________________

Hope this doesn't get done. The reasons for not resigning him far outweigh the reasons to. _________________

To me I'd rather sign Hatcher to a 2 year 4mil extension. I wish we hadn't franchised Spencer, and could have been in the Levitre sweepstakes, but that's the past. |
