Quote:
The Cleveland Plain Dealer expects the Browns to sign Alex Mack to a long-term extension.
Mack is in the final year of his rookie contract, so the Browns could look to extend him before the season when they still have leverage. A first-round pick in 2009, it remains to be seen how Mack is valued by GM Mike Lombardi. The Browns will enter training camp roughly $31 million under the salary cap.

Glad to see this, I think we all kinda knew that it was going to get done though

Definitely deserved. I wouldn't trade a center in the league (or out of it for that matter) for him.

I think he is at least on par at his position to what Joe Thomas is at his.

Makes sense, we should use as much of our cap room this year as possible doing extensions

Yeah I'm hearing Mack is the one who gets extended. I'm hearing Browns are concerned about Ward's injury history and will probably wait until later with him.

8 million per year and front load it since we have the extra cap room...

Is there any downside to usisng every bit of cap room we have this year to give extra money to players now so that we can give them less later??

I dont even me extending people.

Say a guy has 4 more years left. Can we restructure the deal to give more NOW and less later, freeing up money in the years where hopefully we are competing??

Or is money with our owner going to be too much of an issue for this. Hmm

im not the biggest fan of front loading because it opens up the can of worms of the player wanting a new contract because he deserves to make the yearly salary as other top players in his position. I remember I think the jets did that for Revis. Gave him a fat front loaded contract but near the final years he complained about it and got a new one

It doesnt need to be anything drastic.

Hell, take EVERY player we have under contract the next 2-3 years and add a million this year and take off a million on the last year.

I would think any player would be ok with a million bucks now instead of a million bucks in 2 years.

Not to rain on your parade but Nick Mangold is probably the best center in the league when healthy...

I would have been surprised if they didn't extend him sometime soon. He's a top 3-5 center, so let's not wait until free agency where his price tag would likely only increase.

I'm fine with waiting on Ward, though. Let's see how he plays in the new scheme and if he can stay healthy. Only problem with that is if he plays really well, he'll only cost more money. But hey, if he has a great season, then I'd be happy for the front office to give him a nice, big contract to reward his level of play.

So, would you trade Mack for him? I love Nick, and he was the obvious best center before the injury bug struck, but now that has to lower his value, at least slightly. Mack is a couple years younger also.

Back against the wall...I keep Alex.

Oh, and most importantly, Mack has more TD's in probowl games.
