I posted this in the Patriots forum regarding a possible Brent Celek trade with the Eagles:

Billy Spikes wrote:
At first look at might seem going overboard by trading for a TE at this point but lets face facts, Hernandez will probably at best case miss 4 games due to a suspension even IF he's not involved, just for damaging the league's image, and he will probably lose a lot more time than that, possibly seasons if he's indicted in his alleged crimes.

There is a strong chance that Gronkowski will start the season on PUP to get to full health and then football, plus as much as i hate to say that and hope it's not the case, there is the chance those injuries will keep piling on as he can't seem to shake the injury bug recently.

Jack Ballard is coming off a big-time injury and only really has his rookie season with the Giants on his resume, Daniel Fells sucks terribly and Michael Hoomanawanui is average talent that is more of a fit as an H-Back that a traditional TE. [also skills-set wise, he's basically just a blocker]

Zach Sudfeld and Brandon Ford are undrafted rookies, and yes, although Sudfeld has been lighting it out in camp, the thought of him been our number one TE on week 1 is scary, by the way he also had injury and production issues.

It seems that Brent Celek is on the outs in Philly, the last rotoworld update:

Quote:
Coach Chip Kelly said Brent Celek's strength is his blocking.
Kelly isn't impressed by the 280 catches, 3,473 yards and 20 touchdowns Celek has compiled in his six-year Eagles career. "We're trying to teach him to be a composite receiver ó to read coverages, to read intermediate-level routes and to do things that he hasnít done a lot of," Kelly said. With Zach Ertz and James Casey in town, Celek isn't even on the TE2 radar this season.

Also the Eagles just drafted Zach Ertz in the 2nd round and signed James Casey from the Texans in free-agency.

Celek is signed to a manageable $3.25M in 2013 and $4M in 2014 [those numbers can be re-worked] his current contract runs until 2017.

Should the Patriots make a move if it only costs them a 4th round pick?

I'm sure as fans you like Celek more than Chip Kelly possibly does, but what do you think the chances are he gets traded to the Patriots for a 4th or 4th and 7th round picks if Hernandez ends up missing 2013 or possibly more?

My initial feeling is that we won't be eager to trade Celek because he is more or less our number 2 TE.

I'm under the impression that James Casey will be used all over the field and not just as a traditional TE.

Ertz hasn't even been present for the offseason activities because he just graduated a few days ago. I don't think it would be wise for us to move Celek at this point. Perhaps I'd feel better about trading Celek when training camp starts and if Ertz impresses.

Ertz missed all of mini camp, I'd prefer to see what Ertz and Casey looks like with pads on before we make a move and I would hope we could get more than a 4th round pick out of it.

Ertz is an unproven rookie. Casey will likely be used somewhat similar to Hernandez. Celek is still the best TE on the team.

Chip has stated that he really wants to utilize a lot of 2 TE sets and will likely keep 4 TE's on the roster. I really don't see him letting Celek go because we have no one outside of those 3. Unless you guys (NE) put together a ridiculous offer it probably won't happen.

Clay Harbor on the other hand.... take him!

Celek will be our #1 traditional TE. We'd lose a lot by giving him up.

I literally hate the Pats as much as any other team in the NFC East. I wouldn't give them a glass of water if they were dying of thirst. No way I would trade them any player, except Vick.

The Patriots will ask Celek to learn the same sort of routes that Chip is now coaching him to execute. I don't see this being a fit for the reasons that you listed. Celek ran west coast routes which were pretty much a fixed thing with few options after the snap of the ball. Celek could prove to have problems like Chad Johnson in the Patriots offense.

You don't need him, you just signed a pair of young legs in Kellen Winslow.
