I thought the league told the Bears to stop retiring jerseys. Not enough numbers to go around or something.

I read that somewhere as well - guess it was just one of those rumors that got passed around so much it started to become real.

George McCaskey says after Mike Ditka's #89 - "we do not intend to retire anymore numbers"

Funny with the timing after #54 retiring...

Halfway point and you are correct.

It is kind of odd, and the report came out after midnight which also seems odd.

It is about time Mike got his number retired - however, we are running out of numbers to give out. I mean, Khaseem Greene is #60 for Pete's sakes! Laughing

That'll change once some of the guys in the 50s or 90s don't make the team.

Fans have complained about the Bears not retiring 99 (Hampton), 95 (Dent), 50 (Singletary), and for some stupid reason 72 (Perry), and I'm sure we're going to hear grumblings about 54, 55, 90, 33, and 23 within the next few years. Retiring all or even half of those numbers just isn't feasible and people need to understand it's not "disrespectful" for new players to wear those numbers.

That's why the Ring of Honor thing makes so much more sense.

Having a ring of honor would be the best way to pay respect to the many Bears greats. Lots of teams have a ring, I'm not sure why we haven't caught on to the idea.

I always believed the Bears should have their own Hall of Fame or at least a Chicago Sports HoF. I know there is the Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame down on Taylor Street but I believe those are I/As from all over and, of course, leave out all the non-I/As.

The Patriots have something called "The Hall at Patriot Place" that has exhibits and a team Hall of Fame.

Again, this is something the Bears could have done had they moved out of Soldier Field earlier this decade, but now they're shackled by Chicago Park District and historical structure, and while ownership is still not anywhere close to the level of Bob Kraft, it was even worse back then.
