You know people are chomping at the bit for football when the most active thread in a forum devolves into a group analysis of how a single lineman is sweating. Let's fricking play some football already!

-- Receiver Nate Burleson appears to be back at 100 percent after breaking his leg last October. He ran with the first team, and did not lose any quickness. Burleson also lost weight (198 pounds to 192) this offseason to add speed.

How much speed is gained with a loss of 6 pounds? Is the correlation between weight-loss and speed gained on a linear scale, or some sort of decreasing power/exponential scale?

When you're in the kind of shape he's been in throughout his career, that weight loss means next to nothing in terms of actual speed.

However, it does generally mean that he's going to be putting less stress on certain parts of his body... particularly in his knees, back, ankles and feet. He's a fairly injury prone guy, and he's in the twilight of his career. That weight loss could literally mean everything or nothing... but we simply won't ever know.

For example, that extra 6 pounds could mean the difference between a torn ACL or a full healthy season... but we can't know since we can't simulate the actual upcoming season with him at his two different weights.

Is it just me, or has Dom gotten really fat this offseason? Confused

Turns out he packed on 20 lbs this off-season much like Rob Sims last year did.

I don't doubt he's gained weight, he looks fat. I don't see it as "bulking up" when it's all in his gut. But Mlive can spin it however they wish. Laughing

I don't know which I am more curious about. What did he say wrong? Or what did you say wrong?

LF is 100% correct.

When people are trying to gain muscle mass, they will eat a lot more and gain mass both in muscle and in fat. When they've put on a satisfactory amount of muscle, then they 'cut,' by which I mean they reduce their caloric intake to lose the fat they put on. It's a lot more difficult to put on muscle weight if you're trying to maintain a low body fat percentage while doing so.

So right now he's probably bulking, and later on in the offseason he'll start cutting and lose the extra paunch.
