He made Mike Sims-Walker, Mike Thomas, Matt Jones, Reggie Williams and Ernest Wilford look like serviceable/good #2-#3 options, and none of them were worth a damn with any other QB, or any other team. That really is the biggest testament to him as a player.

For 6 years, I had been expecting to make the mistake of mentioning one when I meant the other. It finally happened.

Things didn't come together in San Francisco until after Garrard was done though.

He led the team to their most relevant moments the past decade, was an inspiration for those afflicted with Crohn's, and was a tough QB. He put up with lackluster offensive lines (Most hit QB 2008-2009) and got production out of guys like Reggie Williams, Ernest Wilford, Dennis Northcutt, Matt Jones, Mike Sims-Walker, Mike Thomas, Jason Hill, etc. He took teams that should have had 2-5 wins and got 7-8 wins. That's not spectacular, but that's not what he was. Garrard was a big part of the organization for a long time and he had a lot of criticism (some warranted, some definitely not) and adversity along the way.

I'm glad he is retiring a Jaguar. It saddens me a little that a lot of people didn't realize how much of an asset he was until he left. He had a hard road to becoming the starter, faced the aforementioned criticism almost nonstop from 2008-2010, and then spent three years desperately trying to return to the game that he loved.

He wasn't really a great QB. He very likely won't be a QB that is well-remembered. A lot of people still won't appreciate the things he did as the Jaguars QB because he had such a long road and played on such bad teams. However, he'll always be my QB.

He never got a chance to be respected among his QB peers because we never gave him average WRs or an OL
