Rolando McClain’s turbulent NFL career is coming to an end at the age of 23.

The Ravens placed the inside linebacker and former first-round pick on the reserve/retired list Wednesday afternoon, General Manager Ozzie Newsome announced.

... come again?

What is wrong with these NFL players now-a-days?

I wonder if McClain came to this decision on his own or if maybe he was advised by someone, maybe Ozzie, to retire rather than be cut... take a year off to rebuild his image and then return with a few interested suitors vs. being cut by Ozzie and no other team being willing to take a chance on him after seeing Ozzie kick him to the curb.

I'm probably thinking way too far into this, but when things don't make sense... I can't help but try and think of a rational reason for why something like this might happen... and that's all I've got with this one.

The offseason losses continue with another linebacker retiring... we just can't catch a break.

Aren't you glad you didn't think to include McClain in your sig? You'd be pretty screwed right now if you had. Laughing

Yeah, it's funny, I was just thinking the same thing. Good thing, I didn't even think to include him in it... it's like I unconsciously knew he wasn't going to be around for long.

Sorry if this is brought up a lot, not a Raven's fan nor check this board by what are the chances of Brian Urlacher being brought in to see if he can make the cut?

Loved the Brown draft pick but makes sense to at-least let him try and win a spot next to him doesn't it?

I don't think signing Urlacher, or any other linebacker for that matter, is very likely. The team has a plethora of guys that can compete for the starting position beside Brown including Josh Bynes, Jameel McClain, Albert McClellan, Bryan Hall, and even John Simon who I, and others, think could make a Tedy Bruschi like conversion from defensive lineman to inside linebacker.

Another guy who intrigues me is Spencer Adkins. Drafted by the Falcons in 2009 from the U, with some very impressive pro day numbers. Anyone have thoughts on him? I might go over to the Falcons board to see what they have to say about him.

The Ravens just released a bunch of older, slower veterans from our defense. The key in grabbing Elam over Cyprien was speed.

We aren't going to bring in an old, slow veterans with 0 experience in a 3-4 in a guy like Urlacher. It would go against the entire movement we've been making on defense.

Will he retire a Raven or a Raider to the Hall of Shame?

Yep. I'm not concerned about Rolando retiring at all, but bringing in a guy like Urlacher would set the defense back. If/when Jameel is ready to go he should be all they need in terms of a "veteran" at that position. Even if he isn't playing he's still probably going to be around the team and other players. With the addition of Brown, a guy who can excel in space, I'm pretty content with the ILB group. If they do add another guy at that position I'd actually prefer it be another player who's similar to Brown and not a thumper type.

What about Daryl Smith? Why is he still a free agent? Could he play ILB for a 3-4 scheme?

Other than that, I just don't know. We might as well try to roll into the season with Brown and Jameel McClain as starters and hope to God that we have some UDFA or some other guy suddenly become capable of being a stud.
