Quote:
The move peels $3.2 million off this year’s salary cap, and also cuts into the cash Williams was due to make in future years by $8 million over the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Without that concession, there was a real possibility this would have been his last year in Carolina.

Good move. I'm glad he did this. It makes him far less expendable moving forward baring he has productive seasons.

good move helps fix future cap to.

could mean several things will have to see. make easier to trade? or just clearing cap room?

The speculation is this is to clear room to resign Hardy.

Here's a more in depth article about how the contract is laid out.

Quote:
Williams, scheduled to earn $5 million in 2013 but carrying a cap hit of $8.2 million, will still earn the $5 million, but his cap number will reflect what he earns. His $4.75 million base salary and $250,000 workout bonus for 2013 was converted to an $850,000 base with a $150,000 bonus and a $4 million signing bonus.

That signing bonus is prorated through 2017 after the team stuck two "dummy years" at the end of his contract. Essentially, his contract will void at the end of the 2015 season, and the Panthers will have to account for $2.2 million in dead money in those two years, according to the article.

The team is now $8.46 million under the 2013 salary cap, according to the article.

Scheduled to make $13 million in his final two seasons, Williams' restructured contract will earn him $5 million, with the potential to earn up to $750,000 in salary escalators in each of those two years.

The end result: The Panthers could save as much as $8 million in cash while shaving $7 million in cap space in those final two contract years.

The article also indicates that they somewhat used Kenjon Barner as a writing on the wall type scenario if he did not renegotiate. Williams knew he was not going to get paid what he was getting paid here anywhere else nor get as long a contract, so choose to take less cash now and hoping to stay on the team longer.

Well that's a hell of a deal. Ecstatic that he's going to still be around.

gettlemen so far is the man. This is a pay cut for Dwill but I still wouldn't mind making that kind of money. Glad to see double trouble still intact

Gettleman. Very Happy

Also, mad props to DeAngelo Williams for being willing to do this. Glad we'll be able to keep him now. No matter what anyone says, when you run the offense right, the combination of Stewart and Williams is just deadly. It is, in my opinion, the best RBBC of all-time when considering how long they have been together.

I knew it was going to happen but figured it would be during camp. Smitty and DWill may retire at the same time. That would be a big hit for us unless we get another WR before then.

This is awesome. I'm glad D-Will did it. Him and Stewart are a great duo. We'll get to see Double Trouble for at least one more year.

Gettleman has been a beastly GM so far.
