Smart move. Was wondering how long it would take until he finally made his decision.

Screws up the draft, then leaves..

Yikes..

Ill support E.J. and root full on for him to do well with us..

Buuuuut.. I would have much rather seen him hand it over sooner, then we draft Jarvis Jones, Robert Woods, and Matt Barkley with our top 3 picks..

There's a lot of speculation that 2013 was Doug Whaley's first draft rather than Buddy Nix's last. Look at how many character concern guys we took that Buddy usually avoids like the plague.

It would explain the timing. Nix stayed long enough to take the blame for the QB if it doesn't work out so that Whaley will get another shot at a QB before getting the boot if Manuel busts.

I'm not sure what actually happened behind their doors, and could believe it either way, but it's possible you're blaming the wrong person.

I'm 100% sure Whaley was on board and had major say on who we selected and Doug Marrone got the players he wanted for his offense.

If this really was Doug Whaley's "ghost" first draft, I can say I'm actually kind of excited for the future.

Sans the EJ pick of course. Laughing

Makes sense, it's what most of us expected to happen at some point. Probably best to do it right after a draft rather than right before one. I don't think Whaley has officially been named the GM yet, but it will be a complete shock if he isn't.

Not I, the more I'm learning about our system the more I'm convinced he was the best fit, and I'm 100% positive he would have been off the board before 41 to Philly.

In less than a year our front office has completely changed. We went from old to young over night.

CEO- Ralph Wilson to Russ Brandon
GM- Buddy Nix to Doug Whaley
HC- Chan Gailey to Doug Marrone
QB- Ryan Fitzpatrick to EJ Manuel

Youth movement ftw.

IM not sure what you guys are thinking that the Ej pick was all Nix it was clearly a group effort. From day 1 of the offseason Bandon, Nix, and Whaley saw the players and potential coaches and they all came to a conclusion. I think whaley had as much input as Nix did. This isn't something that is a surprise we have heard about this since Gailey saw the door. This isn't Nix QB it is Whaley's Qb and I think the new regime will prove to all these pessimistic people who think EJ isn't the answer.

I like what we did this draft, regardless of who was calling the shots. It won't matter who's pick it was if it works out; Only if it doesn't. We traded down from 8, and in the process we prevented a divisional rival from being able to add the weapon they coveted (Tavon Austin). Then, after doing so, we still got the QB that was #1 on our board. Couple that with the addition of Woods, Kiko, Goodwin, etc, I think we did a good job. I'm excited. We're going to be so fast. It's ridiculous. Let's just hope that these guys grasp the system quickly, which I don't think will be an issue for some of these guys, as they have West Coast offense experience. I'm excited. I always am, but I am more so this year than I have been in recent years. As for the EJ pick, there's no question the Bills FO did their homework this year. They studied these guys intensely. They interviewed them all. They did everything they could to prepare for this QB class. They had the pick of the litter at their disposal. If EJ was the guy they chose, there's a reason for it. Right? Lol.

Buddy has given us...

Spiller, Carrington, Dareus Searcy, Hairston, Gilmour, Glenn, Graham, Bradham, Brooks, and Sanders,

all from past 3 drafts. Some starters and some good quality depth players. B+

re-signed: Stevie, Chandler, K. Williams, Urbik, Brown, McKelvin, Freddy, B. Scott, and Dickerson.

Most of them starters or great quality players. A

Free agents: Mario Williams, Mark Anderson, Manny Lawson, Nick Barnett, Alan Branch, and Pears.

Not all produced as well as hoped, but most have panned out. C+

IMO, Buddy has done a phenomenal job as the GM of Buffalo. Hiring Gailey was a mistake but lets be honest...nobody wanted this job. Marrone is a fantastic hire, and could be exactly what the Bills need moving forward into the future. Finally, Nix drafted the Bills franchise QB (on paper for now at least). If EJ pans out then its quite possible Buddy goes down as one of the best GM's in Bills history.

It's quite possible his best draft as the Bills GM was his final one this past April.

This is true, while I am not a big Nix supporter, I was more because of Whaley waiting int he wings. It is not as if Nix did a bad job, if we just look back to the not so long ago past when Jauron was head coach, yah, Nix did a fine job.

Per Jason La Canfora via Twitter:

"Bills intend to announce Doug Whaley as their new GM Thurs, with the transition from Buddy Nix to Whaley long in the works"

As expected.
