Strange timing... I mean this was probably going to happen after the season, but why step down after the whole offseason pretty much, but before any games have been played...?

He's going to tradition to Special Assistant, huh?

What exactly is a Special Assistant? Do I even want to know?

All from the Bills Twitter, I guess from his press conference.

Nix: "I've made the decision to step away as GM because I feel it's the right time ... good young roster with excellent head coach & staff"

Nix: "It's time for someone else to handle these [GM] responsibilities ... I'm fortunate to step away ... and still remain a part of the...

Nix: "I feel strongly that #Bills are on the right course for success. This is going to be an exciting time for our team and our fans"

I don't think so. It's a bad time to fire a GM. Why let go of him now, when you just let him decide the next 3+ years of your franchise with the pick of Manuel? If they had enough faith in him to allow that to happen, why fire him now, before even getting a season worth of results?

Maybe they want the head coach to run the show, unless I hear they hire a new GM. Maybe they should go back to AJ Smith, I heard he's pretty good...........at drafting good and then destroying the team. Laughing

A little clarification for those who aren't overly familiar with the inner working of the Bills.

Buddy Nix is not being fired, and is even remaining with the Bills. This is a transition that's been in the works for a while. He's been training up Doug Whaley to take over for him and talking of retirement, so this is no surprise, even if many expected it to happen after the season.

There's about a 99.9% chance Whaley is officially announced as the GM in the very near future, and he's already been doing some of that work to begin with.

Very weird timing. I'm actually a little sad to see him go; he was probably the only GM who was blatantly upfront about what the Bills were going to do in the first round of the draft lol.

Do they go interim GM for this year and name someone after the year is over? Worked for the niners with Baalke. I just think it's sort of a weird time of the season to be trying to get in a new general manager

This is pure speculation, but considering there were quite a few Bills fans predicting for some time that Nix would step down shortly after the draft, I think it's worth sharing why they thought that would happen.

The theory is that Whaley was given the keys to the 2013 draft and ran the show in place of Nix. Nix was officially kept in the GM position so that if Whaley's QB choice doesn't pan out, Nix gets the blame and Whaley gets another shot a franchise QB before he's axed.

I'm not sure whether or not I believe it, but considering the Bills took more than one player with significant character concerns, when Buddy Nix normally avoids them like the plague, it's at least worth considering. It would also fully explain the timing.

CONSPIRACY THEORY!!!!!!

The entire FO was unahppy with the Manuel pick, and after a week of rookie TC, they decided to quietly let him "step down" because of how bad the pick was.

This is just like in Trouble With The Curve Wink
