I tried to find a thread where I could put this without starting a new one, but none of them really fit.

Somehow, I don't think Cleveland Browns fans would have any sympathy for us.

We have been spoiled for success. Which is part of the reason that has made the past decade and change so challenging.

I think the most difficult part about being a Cowboys fan over the past decade is the fact that this team continues to make the same mistakes that prohibit them from getting better. They do not protect the football well, they do not get turnovers, they refuse to address glaring areas of need ( OL, DL) and address postions that are fairly well fixed (CB, LB).
They hang on to players long after the player has begun to show diminished abilities and get nothing in return via trade value or comp picks, they make poor trade deals (Roy Williams, Joey Galloway WR's) and they recycle coaches every 3-5 years.

Once they get a coach that knows what he wants, builds in the manner in which that coach wants, allow him enough time to execute his plan, cut the dead or diminishing weight, make some good trade deals, get compensation for multiple 1st round picks that we wiff on (M. Jenkins, M. Spears, F. Jones, B. Carpenter, etc), and add in a little luck with injuries and perhaps this team will begin to win more when it counts the most. Then we could get back to enjoy the fact that we are Cowboys fans.

I think the hardest part of being a Cowboys fan is that everyone hates you Laughing

Nah.

You will find in life that if you are really good at something or really successful, you will find the ire of many. Can't worry about other people.

This is actually one of the more enjoyable aspects of being a Dallas fan, imo. Though it was far more enjoyable when Dallas was putting up more Ws.

That's some great advice.

As for the original topic, I don't find it hard to be a Cowboys fan and never have felt that way. I have been a Cowboys fan pretty much my whole life. I was born in 1975 and have loved the Cowboys since Easter 1978. Not once have I ever found it hard to be a fan. Even in 1989 when we went 1-15, it was still easy to love the team. A real fan doesn't just love the team when it is good. A real fan loves the team just as much despite the problems and through the tough times. A true fan shows his support for the team, even when he doesn't agree with a LOT of the decisions being made by the owner/GM.

You anti-Jerry guys think you have it rough? Try being a Houston Astros fan. Their entire payroll this year is about $19 million. There are several MLB players who make more than the entire Astros team. Having a cheapskate owner who is not willing to pay to make the team better is hard. Being an Astros fan is a lot harder than being a Cowboys fan. At least Jerry Jones wants to win. Jim Crane, not so much.

Going on 18 years of mediocre which is a little more than decade and change.

Rolling Eyes

I swear some people love to nit-pick. But if you want to play this game (for whatever dumb reason) going 13-3 isn't mediocre.

But my original point - which I guess for some people I have to qualify to the extreme now - was that because of such Success Dallas has had in over 50 years, there is an expectation to win. Having such a extended period without sustain success has been draining.

Does that statement work for you now?

Yes, Having teams like the Giants win SB, and SF and Philly going to SB makes being a Cowboy fan tougher and tougher after experiencing all the success for 2 decades.

They are around .500 over the last 18 years, and until they can actually put together 2 or 3 years of being above average. Lets say making it to an NFC championship team then people other than Cowboy fans will actually take this team seriously. Because right now most of the national media thinks the Cowboys are a joke/circus.

People can post whatever they want too, so long as it is within forum rules. A healthy debate on football related topics is what this site used to be about. I think that if we all just try a little bit, we can get this site back to that point, at least for the next 90 days or so.

People want to say that Jerry Jones is what is wrong with the Dallas Cowboys. I can see where they are coming from. He has made several bad decisions as Owner/GM. He's also had more success since taking over the team than anyone else.

1960-1988 under Clint Murchison/Bum Bright = 2 Super Bowl titles in 29 years
1989-present under Jerry Jones = 3 Super Bowl titles in 24 years

You don't have to like the man but it is hard to argue that overall, regardless of Jerry's many faults, he has been good for the Dallas Cowboys.
