Just imagine if he came back one more year with the unit we have now...

Quote:
Ronde Barber said he probably would not have retired if he was still a starter.Barber started 232 of his 241 career games. But as the Bucs overhauled their secondary, he would have been mere depth at age 38. "If Mark (Dominik) and Greg (Schiano) would've said, 'Hey, we absolutely need you to play, you played great last year, here's X amount of dollars, come play, we need you...' That wasn't necessarily the case," he said.

Ronde can say and do what he pleases, he has more than earned that right.

Not a fan of him making these comments at all though. Was he still not thinking about his future until after fa and the draft? I remember Greg saying in an interview that they told Ronde to take his time and when he is ready let them know what his plans.

How long was Greg and Mark supposed to wait?

I actually don't have a problem with him saying this. The reason is he has always be a truthful guy, and he is not saying anything bad about anyone. Ronde to me is one of the best blitzing corners in the game and might at one time been the best cover 2 corner as well. (IMHO)

If you read all of Ronde's comments he is just being honest. He's comfortable with his decision.

If Barber had been asked to return as a starter, it might've been enough to lure him back.

"Possibly. That would've made it a little bit harder of a decision, obviously," Barber said. "But that wasn't the case. They wanted me to play, I don't doubt that at all. I had open lines of communication with Mark the past couple of years about continuing to play.

"At the end, it was me deciding I didn't need football as much as I once did and it was time to venture into a new thing."

I don't post that often, but I read regularly. It's nice to see him mostly getting his due in the general forum, although there are still a few detractors out there.

In general, myself included, I think most of us just took for granted having him. It was like having 10 positions on defense, we didn't have to worry about where Ronde was playing. He was just so consistently good for such a long time. We were so lucky to have him.

I remember thinking that Brett Favre waited one year too long to retire (again). If Ronde Barber had decided to play another year, could that have turned out the same way? He certainly would have been playing more of a backup position.

I think that he has made the right decision that suits him and his family best. He has gone out at the top of his game and should have no regrets. He has left us all with a feeling of pride and admiration for how he has played, but also how he has lived his life.

I look forward to seeing what the next chapter in his life will be.

Best wishes and good luck to a future hall of famer.

The epitome of True PRO. #20 is my fave of all-time, he did it all, the perfect teammate. Congrats to Ronde for an unforgettable career. He deserves the Hall.

And that pick 6 that shut down the VET still leaves me speechless just like that stadium that night.

How does he not see that it's because of what he is doing right there? He's opening his mouth AND whining. Ronde never did either...

Ronde was a class-act and a great player. I'll miss him, but all in all I think it was the right decision. I'm happy to see him retire on his own terms in Red and Pewter.

the more I think about it, he didn't really choose on his own terms. Dom and Schiano kind of forced his hand with the bolstering of the secondary. Still if Ronde wanted to come back im sure Schiano would have made a role for him and he would have had him "start" every game as the nickle LB/Nickle CB
