As reported Sunday, Rob Gronkowski continues to be in a holding pattern, as doctors hope the tight endís recently completed six-week course of antibiotic treatment finally stomps out a lingering infection in his left forearm.

According to a source familiar with the case, Gronkowski is going to need a fourth operation to change the plate thatís securing the broken bone in the forearm.

The real question is if Gronkowski, who has been taking part in the teamís offseason program, will need a fifth operation.

If tests show the infection has been completely flushed out, the plate will be replaced, and the recovery process begins. If there are still signs of infection, that wonít happen.

Man this sucks. Sad

We should all get together and beat up Sergio Brown.

More possible bad news for Rob Gronkowski. A disc issue in his back is being examined and could require surgery:

Rob Gronkowski's back issue considered minor, per source. If he needs surgery it'd be during time frame that he'd be out with arm surgery.

As @MikeGarafolo first reported, Rob Gronkowski has back issue. One NFL source said issue is minor. Another said slightly more.

Gronkowski will see noted spine specialist Robert Watkins in the near future following his surgery on his forearm. That surgery if all goes well will take about 10 weeks for Gronkowski to recover from.

Still 16 weeks until week 1 of the season... problem is, the doctors don't want to have both the forearm surgery and another surgery so close to each other.

Gronk out of surgery. Infection gone. New plate installed. Good news all around.

Bummer. Here's to hoping for as smooth and long a recovery as he needs to be fully healthy again.

I was under the impression that the 4th surgery was a given for the past few months. That's what will cost him most of camp. A 5th surgery is what we should be worried about.

I'm not real sure why they would change the plate. Remove the plate yes, but changing the plate makes no sense. Removing the plate would actually be a good sign and hopefully that's what they are talking about.

The new info is the timetable. After this surgery he will either be good to go for opening day or he will need a fifth and miss half the season.

So he's having a 4th surgery to replace his plate with a new one... but he will still be ready for camp? Why does he even need another surgery, why does the plate need to be replaced (wouldn't that just risk another infection)? Just curious, I don't know how these things go.

This surgery is also to determine if any of the tissue is infected. If so, he'll need additional surgeries and could be out for quite awhile. If not, he'll almost undoubtedly be ready for camp.

E: hah, within a minute, figures. ^^

New, much worse update:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/patriots/2013/05/17/rob-gronkowski-back-surgery-new-england/2206369/

Gronk may have blown a different disk in his back, has been playing with severe back pain since last season and may need another surgery on his back.

At least if he needs surgery for this too, the recovery timetable is similar to his arm.

Well, the world can always use more bartenders.

Gronk, a week ago:
