Why would we wait and see? If he has a monster season than he's going to cost us much more than he will right now.

And if he injures the same pectoral again he could an incredible waste of a signing bonus.Let him play a healthy season before I want to give him more than 3 years at any cost. Twisted Evil

how bout 1/2 a season?

Lets say its November or December and Orakpo is healthy. Would you give him an extension then before he hits the open market and costs us more?

The same could be said for Fred Davis. If Davis looks great the first 2 months of the season, would you consider extending him before he hits the open market also?

You don't think they're going to negotiate things like that into his new deal? Allen knows how to protect this team from issues like that. Clown shoes Cerrato is no longer running the team.

I would work on extension with Orakpo now. It would save us some money in the long run. Like others said we can put some injury protection in the contract. Quality pass rushers are hard to find. Fred Davis on the other hand is not only coming off injury but has off the field issues as well. Too much risk there to sign him long term now. In fact, we would have signed him to a longer deal had we wanted to but we didn't. He has a lot more to prove than Orakpo, and TEs are easier to replace.

Given that Orakpo has a $5.1M cap value this year, I suspect they'll try to extend his contract in order to free up some cap room.

Yea, waiting for Orakpo to explode or implode, would be insane business, imo.
Why not lock down a Pro Bowler & key part of your Defense & WHO WANTS to be here for 4 or 5 yrs while his value is reasonable.

Just put some clauses in his contract on his pectoral/injuries, that offers a way out or reduced salary.

Lock him down now for 4 or 5 years and be done with it.

OR...you run the risk of him exploding with 25 sacks and wanting Mario Williams money or even worse....have to TAG him and be in a Victor Cruz situation. Run the risk of losing him for nothing.

Give him a 5 yr deal, that's voidable after 3 from us.
Some injury clauses and give him his money up front for next season, so it's not a contract we'll have to restructure to help with CAP later on.

We should have plenty of cash next season, to do that. As our 36M dollar penalty is OVER.

No...You do it now, while he should be very reasonable to work with.

Last thing we need is him breaking Strahan's sack record & his Contract being ESPN News everyday on...."Will the Redskins re-sign Orakpo?....."Will they keep him"?....Rumors are the Jets are interested....blah...blah..blah. New Geico commercials..etc.

No...You nip that in the butt right now! Laughing

What's that thing the CABLE GUY always says...?

Get'r Dun!

That's what you do.

We'll have plenty of cash next year-we can always Tag him, Trade him maybe.
That's why we drafted Brandon Jenkins. He and Jackson as a tandem can replace Rak.

yeah, who knows. If they free up room by extending him and lowering his cap # from this year it might lead to us signing another player in TC if we don't like how a certain position looks.

Like let's say Kerry Rhodes or Corey Lynch if they're still available and our safeties don't look adequate in TC, maybe we'll sign one of them.

Lynch was on the radar heading into the draft, haven't heard anything lately
