http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/05/06/if-chiefs-go-8-8-they-owe-49ers-a-second/

Quote:
Peter King of Sports Illustrated has filled in the blanks on the conditional 2014 pick the Chiefs owe the 49ers to complete the Alex Smith trade, noting that it’s a second-rounder if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better, but will be a third if they’re 7-9 or worse. Getting to .500 could be a reasonable goal for the Chiefs, who have checked off many boxes this offseason, beginning with finding a QB. And the better Smith plays, the better able his old team will be to make more draft-day moves. The 49ers could have as many as three extra third-rounders in addition to their own picks, which would mean six of the first 100 picks.

Yeah, I figured that's what the conditions would end up being. So basically, it's a round 2.5 pick that they gave up in 2014 - locked into either the last half of the 2nd round or top half of the 3rd. Fine by me. Kansas City going exactly 8-8 is obviously the best possible outcome, then, with exactly 7-9 as the worst possible outcome. We may end up rooting pretty hard for the Chiefs towards the end of the season, depending on how things shake out.

I think most of us thought it would be something like this.

I'll be cheering for Alex, Andy and the Chiefs anyway but this makes it much sweeter...

I thought it would be more directly tied to Alex... mainly in # of starts.

Anyway, this is great news.. as I do think Alex and the Chiefs have a strong enough roster to pull off a non-losing season record.

Cheering for Alex and the Chiefs! Until we they get 8 wins, then I hope they become the worst 8-8 team for a higher pick. I have the Chiefs as the 2nd best team in the AFCW, and I certainly think they can get 8 wins.

Ah, perfect. What we want is not 8-8 or better We want precisely 8-8, and them to win any tiebreakers with any other team that also goes 8-8. Inn the end the pick with be somewhere between the middle of the 2nd and down to the middle of the third. Hopefully it will be in the bottom half of the second, but for sure in the early part of the third.

To think that some niner fans will now be cheering for Alex for the first time in their lives... ironic.

So you think some niner fans never cheered for Alex Smith?

Yup, they need to get to 8-8. No more or no less. Another early to mid 2nd rounder would be awesome! Baalke is a genius!!!

So basically we're hoping for the Chiefs to either be about average or for them to completely bomb?

Sounds like best case would be they go 8-8, along with a bunch of other teams, and the pick the Niners would land could be in the 10-15 range of the 2nd round. Worst case is they go 7-9, while a bunch of other teams go 6-10 or worse, and the pick gets pushed to about mid-3rd.

Either way, it's way more than I expected the team to get for Alex.

Some hated the pick, hated him throughout his career and cheered at his trade. I'm not pointing out anyone on the board, but I'm sure such a human being exists somewhere.

That would be me, for the first time in my life I'll be actively rooting for him to be mediocre
