Quote:
Former LSU placekicker Josh Jasper will try out with the New Orleans Saints next week at a four-day rookie mini-camp beginning May 9. Jasper is the most accurate placekicker in LSU history with an 83.9 success rate.

"I'm excited about trying out with them; I'm happier to be here than somewhere else," said Jasper, who made a school-record 28 of 34 field goals and led the Tigers with 120 points as a senior in 2010. "I've been training non-stop and keeping in shape waiting for this opportunity.

"I'm pretty sure they are bringing in a couple of other kickers. But I don't know who they are."

Here is the kicker help we've all been looking for. Apparently if Sean Payton is bringing in more than one kicker, he really doesn't feel comfortably with Hartley. Can we blame him? Not really, Hartley was one of the NFLs most inconsistent kickers last year.

Good news. With the notable UDFA pickups we had this year I would've thought one of them would've been a high rated kicker that went undrafted, as well. Nonetheless I'm glad to see we're not content with Hartley.

Good. Competition never hurt.

Thank God. I was worried there for a second that Loomis & Payton didn't realize we need a new Kicker. Good to know that they know.

When all you kick is 20-30 yarders that tends to happen..

And he chokes under pressure ever since 09'. After the SB he's been a choker.

That was my point regarding quoting Jaspers accuracy, it doesn't really say much about him.

Did some Googling and he has a career long of 53 and an accuracy of 60% over 50, is that good for a college kicker?

It's good, not great. I like Jasper though, wouldn't mind him here. He's a guy who just comes in, and makes the kicks you ask him to.

Jasper's decent. I still feel like we could've gotten a better UDFA kicker.

It's good competition regardless of if he gets the job or not. It goes back to trying to scare a player into playing better. Hartley will likely work harder and get better if he is the guy we have next year.

Also, Hartley's career stats are skewed. He did a lot better earlier 09 and 10 then he did last year. If we have room, which I don't think we will, I would mind having both. Hartley was actually really good with range, over 40, but sucked from up close. That's where Jasper could come in. I just doubt we'll have room for two kickers.

Saints are also bringing in a Mexican kicker named Jose Carlos Maltos. He's apparently nailed a 64 yarder before and is extremely accurate up to 60 yards. Looking forward to the kicking battle.
