Detroit Lions GM Martin Mayhew surprised and unhappy with arrests of Amari Spievey and Ronnel Lewis

Quote:
General manager Martin Mayhew admitted he is annoyed having to continually deal with these issues. It's especially frustrating because Lewis and Spievey had no previous off-field problems.

Quote:
"There's this sort of thought that we're attracting these guys that have all these problems," Mayhew said. "Ronnell Lewis has never had any problems with the law, and Amari Spievey has never had any problems with the law, until these last two incidents. We vet these guys, we look into their backgrounds, we dig into them. It's unfortunate it happened and it can't happen again, but it was a surprise to us."

During the team's voluntary workouts last week, Mayhew said Lewis came straight to his office to apologize for his behavior, an action Mayhew respects.

"I think he understands his status and where he is right now, but it's frustrating, we've talked about it and we've dealt with it."

Quote:
After playing just one defensive snap as a rookie, Lewis figured to have a more prominent role in his second season, but the Lions added two defensive ends in the draft, burying him on the depth chart once again.

What do you guys think about the ongoing offseason issues?

How would you deal with these two? How would you send a message to the rest of the team?

I think the message was sent last year with Berry and Titus. I don't think you cut these guys due to one issue of their magnitudes. It is annoying but this is happening all over the league. As Mayhew said, they know it can't happen again, and if it does that's when you take action.
