QB: Colin Kaepernick (Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien)
RB: Frank Gore (Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James, Anthony Dixon, Bruce Miller)
TE: Vernon Davis (Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek)
WR: Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin (Quinton Patton, AJ Jenkins, Kyle Williams, Mario Manningham)
OT: Joe Staley, Anthony Davis (Luke Marqueldt)
OG/C- Mike Iupati, Jonathan Goodwin, Alex Boone (Daniel Kilgore, Joe Looney)

DL- Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Glenn Dorsey (Tank Carradine, Quinton Dial, Demarcus Dobbs, Ian Williams)
ILB- Patrick Willis, NaVarro Bowman (Nick Moody, Dan Skuta)
OLB- Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks (Corey Lemenier, Parys Haralson)
CB- Carlos Rogers, Tarrell Brown, Chris Culliver, Nnamdi Asomugha, Tramaine Brock
S- Eric Reid, Donte Whitner, Craig Dahl, CJ Spillman, Trenton Robinson

K- Phil Dawson
P- Andy Lee
LS- Brian Jennings
KR/PR- Kyle Williams, LaMichael James, Kendall Hunter

PUP/IR- Marcus Lattimore

PS- BJ Daniels, Jewel Hampton, Ricardo Lockette, Al Netter, Tony Jerrod-Eddie, Lawrence Okoye, Marcus Cooper, Michael Thomas

Bolded is rookies. I have 8 on the 53 with Lattimore on PUP, and Daniels/Cooper/Okoye on the PS. I think Carter Bikowski gets cut and not put on the PS (think Ronald Johnson and Jason Slowey the last 2 years).

Notable cuts (IMO of course) include Fleming, Cam Johnson, Cox, Tuakufu, and McBath. Although i'd like to see Fleming beat out Haralson- both are somewhat similar players, profile as backups, but Fleming is cheaper and younger. But not necessarily better, not yet anyways.

I agree for the most part right now with everything on the 53 except Mcbath. I think he gets in over robinson; the coaching staff has always been very high on Mcbath as a safety is my understanding. While we just picked robinson last year, I think McBath has the better overall skillset.

My Roster Locks are bolded:

QB - Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien (3)

Kaepernick is the obvious starter. I can see Tolzien over McCoy, but for now I'll assume experience gives McCoy the nod. Either way - both make the roster as I do not expect Daniels to do so.

RB - Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James, Anthony Dixon (4)

If any of the above 4 get injured in the preseason, I think there's a great chance we carry Lattimore on the 53. Otherwise, he's put on PUP/IR for the year. The fact that Dixon was a possible cut last year suggests he might be in that situation again, but last year on the roster was certainly his most productive and he definitely has special teams value. There's just not a lot of room on the roster for a 4th RB.

FB - Bruce Miller (1)

Bruce is awesome. Enough said.

WR - Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams, AJ Jenkins, Quinton Patton (6)

I think the first three are set in stone, though Manningham might not be ready for a while. I strongly considered calling Kyle Williams a lock, at least for this year while Manningham isn't 100% and we have uncertainties in Jenkins/Patton, but those uncertainties kept him as a 'bubble guy' as if either one of them, or hopefully both show they're ready, difficult decisions may need to be made. I don't foresee Kyle Williams not being on the team, however.

TE - Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek (3)

The easiest position group out of them all, as the TE roster/Depth Chart is set.

OT - Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Kenny Wiggins (3)

Starters are obviously set. Wiggins was a shot in the dark as a possible 3rd T over 7th rounder Bykowski and undrafted Marquardt. I think there's the tiniest of possibilities we roll the dice with 7 offensive linemen. There's not a lot of open spots on this team. But - there's always one team you don't expect to make it that does, so my random pick is Wiggins.

G - Mike Iupati, Alex Boone, Daniel Kilgore, Joe Looney (4)

The fact that we didn't touch any guard in free agency/the draft suggests to me that both Kilgore and Looney are making the team and strongly liked by the coaching staff. I think Kilgore takes over Davis's role as the 6th lineman routinely brought in, and Looney takes over Kilgore's as the rotational 7th guy with spot duty. I'm guessing Boone doubles as the backup swing tackle, and Kilgore as the backup center.

C - Jonathan Goodwin (1)

Goodwin is a lock this year, and will likely be replaced next year. Quite possibly our first round pick, or a cheap vet.

Offense Total: 25

DE - Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Tank Carradine, DeMarcus Dobbs, Quinton Dial, Will Tukuafu (6)

Clearly Smith and McDonald are set. I think at first, Dobbs and Tukuafu will be active just based on our history of not playing rookies, but especially once Carradine becomes fully healthy (clearly no rush), he'll get a chance to earn rotation time. Even with Dobbs and Tukuafu's versatility, I wouldn't call either locks, and I can see a scenario where Dial doesn't even make the roster as well (8 DL on the active roster is a ton).

DT - Glenn Dorsey, Ian Williams (2)

Everything I've heard suggests Dorsey is the expected takeover for Sopoaga, especially since the team didn't add any prototypical NTs anywhere this offseason. That also suggests to me that Ian Williams is hopping into the RJF role, as I can't see the team thinking the other players at DE would fit at DT.

OLB - Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks,, Parys Haralson, Corey Lemonier (4)

The starters are set in stone, and I think there's a great chance Lemonier ends up passing out Haralson for playing time. If Lemonier/Carradine can both pick up things right away in preseason, there's a scenario where Haralson becomes a roster cut despite his paycut, but for now...I see him on the team as the incumbent back-up to both Smith/Brooks.

ILB - Patrick Willis, Navorro Bowman, Dan Skuta,(3)

It was hard to pick Skuta over Wilhoite and Fleming, and seems odd to predict only 7 linebackers to go along with 8 defensive linemen, but I had to make cuts somewhere.

CB - Carlos Rogers, Tarrell Brown, Chris Culliver, Nnamdi Asomugha, Perrish Cox, Tramaine Brock (6)

I think the first three are definite locks, and I don't know where Asomugha fits in, that being said. Luckily, this is a preseason problem and if something were to happen and someone were to get injured, there'd be some easier decisions that's for sure. I think Cox and Brock are closer to locks than Nnamdi because of special teams contributions. I also chose to keep Brock as it seems no matter what I predict, he always seems to make the roster.

S - Donte Whitner, Eric Reid, CJ Spillman, Darcel McBath (4)

We have generally kept 5 safeties recently, and it would seem there's a good chance we'll do that if for some reason Eric Reid isn't ready to step up, but I just can't fit a 5th safety on the team. Craig Dahl would be my pick as the 5th if there is one, since he has that contract with some guarantees, but as of now I just can't fit him anywhere unless we only go with 7 OL.

Total: 25

ST - Andy Lee, Phil Dawson, Brian Jennings (3)

Brian Jennings is probably a lock, and I'm still picking him for the roster, but understanding that there's a lot of players I'm cutting that deserve roster consideration, if the team thinks another player can be a LS on the team as well, then there's the tiniest of possibilities that his time on the team is over (which would be sad). Still - every time I've predicted he might get cut based on the roster being stacked from top to bottom, he sticks around. Kinda gotta believe that happens again.

IR/PUP - Marcus Lattimore and anyone drafted or signed as undrafted free agents in the last 2 years with so much as a hangnail.

This was incredibly difficult this year. Gets harder and harder, which is good - as it means our team is getting better and better. I thought there was only room for 5-6 rookies. I found space for 7. I'm happy with that.

Practice Squad:

BJ Daniels
Tony Jerrod-Eddie
Lawrence Okoye
Luke Marquardt
Marcus Cooper
Michael Thomas
Cam Johnson
Nick Moody

Cuts I predicted got picked up elsewhere and that's why they aren't on my practice squad:

Jewel Hampton, Ricardo Lockette, Michael Wilhoite. I would have any of them over Nick Moody and Cam Johnson for sure.

I thought cutting down to 53 players was hard...I then tried to decide which 8 players would be inactive on gamedays. It couldn't be done. Players that were playing before will have to be inactive. No other way around it. Probably Jenkins/Patton for sure, the 3rd QB, Wiggins, Dial, Tukuafu or Dobbs, and then...yeah. Brock or Cox might be one...and then an 8th guy. Have fun Harbaugh.

I have Spillman, Cox, Dixon and Dobbs mostly up there as special teams guys. I'd rather see Tolzien make the final roster over McCoy, but it doesn't look like he will and Daniels has the athleticism over him which is why I have him on the practice squad.

I don't think there is anyway we can cut and place Aj Jenkins (1st round) or McDonald (2nd round) and place them on our ps. I think a team would scoop them up quickly

WR: Ricardo Lockette
DL: Lawrence Okoye
OL: Luke Marquardt
CB: Marcus Cooper
OL: Al Netter
QB: Nate Montana

PUP/IR
Lattimore

I believe Dobbs makes the team due to offensive versatility but could see Tukuafu making it instead. Spillman, Dahl, are very good ST's players. I think Skuta and moody are better options than Gooden, and whilhoite because of ST. Robinson over McBath for his upside. Cox over Brock but could go other way. Dial makes it for depth and size. Haralson over Fleeming for experience. Manningham and Williams are not locks because of their injuries as well as Harbaugh being very high on Lockette. Jenkins because he was first round pick and has huge upside, he also is not eligible for PS. Dixon has good size and helps on ST. Our OL pretty much stays the same but add Bykowski for depth, could switch spots with Marquardt. I put Daniels there for Play making ability as well as he fits system better than Tolzien. However, if Tolzien makes it Daniels will be on PS and Netter will go. I put Cam in front of Fleeming because I don't believe Fleeming is eligible, however if he is than Fleeming over Cam. Nate Montana due to his fathers history.

QB: Kaepernick, McCoy, Tolzien- I almost dropped Tolzien because I believe McCoy is a better oprion at the #2 spot but I decided with the Offense we run and the defenses in our division it is very much possible for two QBs to get hurt. Plus he is cheap, and knows the offense very well by now.
RB: Gore, Hunter, James, Dixon- This was relatively simple Dixon is our big back incase Frank gets hurt plus he is a leader on special teams after it lost Grant, Goldson, Gooden
FB: Miller, Okoye- Yea I did it...so what...come at me bro. I think Okoye impresses in training camp and proves he is a fast learner. but really I'm just going out on a limb.
TE: Davis, McDonald, Morrah- This was the hardest decision because Celek showed he could be a decent #3. Unfortunately he is nothing more and our staff is second to none when it comes to TE development and Morrah has all the potential in the world.
WR: Crabtree, Boldin, K.Williams, Manningham, Patton, Jenkins- I want to put Lockette on the roster but I just couldn't do it. Unless one of the two injured guys cant make it back by the start of the season I think this is almost a lock to be our 6.
LT: Staley, Marquardt
LG: Iupati, Looney
C: Goodwin, Kilgore
LG: Boone
LT: Davis
RDE: J. Smith, Dial- Dobbs is almost expendable now that we drafted Dial, Okoye, and Tank. Same with Tukalufu
NT: Dorsey, I. Williams
LDE: McDonald, Carradine
OLB: A. Smith, Lemonier
ILB: Bowman, Moody- I see Moody being a beast in the preseason and earning his spot over Wilhoite and Flemming. If we liked what we saw out of Flemming and Johnson I dont think we would have drafted Lemonier. They Gone...
ILB: Willis, Skuta
OLB: Brooks, Haralson
CB: Brown, Asomugha, Rogers, Culliver, Cox- Another easy decision Cox has stayed clean and showed more than Brock
FS: Reid, Dahl, Spillman
SS: Whitner, McBath- I think them bringing McBath back showed they like him more than Thomas but he is still practice squad eligible so we should be good there.

K: Dawson
P: Lee
LS: Jennings

PUP: Lattimore

Practice Squad:
QB: BJ Danies- keep an eye out for MaQuies Gray the QB we signed from minnesota he might be here over Daniels but for now we'll play it safe.
OT: C. Bykowski

CB: M. Cooper
SS: M. Thomas
WR: Ricardo Lockette
LS:K McDermott- I think once Jennings gets his ring he's gone and we stash this guy on the practice sqaud just so we keep him for next year and in case Jennings goes down. Remember that raiders game last year?

I'm not going to go into detail on who I expect to make it or not, just want to say this about our Draft picks: I think the only ones nearly guaranteed a roster spot are those picked in rounds 1-4. I think most of the others are on the bubble already, including our 5th rounder, Dial. Many of our late rounders will be vying for the special teams spots that may or may not be available.

Not as though this is any great revelation or anything...probably very obvious, but I said it anyway. Laughing

I think most of the others are on the bubble already, including our 5th rounder, Dial. Many of our late rounders will be vying for the special teams spots that may or may not be available.

Not as though this is any great revelation or anything...probably very obvious, but I said it anyway. Laughing

I hear ya. I am too lazy to do the research, but I feel pretty sure to say that it's rare when teams outright dump a rd 1-4 pick in their first year. Later picks get dumped plenty enough.
