To break down position of need IMO, contracts up in 2014:
TE
Jermichael Finley
Matthew Mulligan
Andrew Quarless
FS
Morgan Burnett
M.D. Jennings
DL
Ryan Pickett
B.J. Raji
Michael Neal
C.J. Wilson
C
Evan Dietrich-Smith
WR
James Jones
CB
Sam Shields
ST
Jamari Lattimore
Rob Francois

Depth at either strong side LB would be nice too.
1) They are working on a long-term deal with Shields, so I would assume that when he comes back, it's going to be more than just for 2013.

2)I think Morgan Burnett, B.J. Raji, and maybe Evan Dietrich-Smith are "must bring back" guys.

That's a pretty good list from Hyp, but I gotta say that Raji and Burnett are much more important than EDS. EDS is a stop-gap at this point, if he can develop into a solid player at C this year, then we bring him back. I just don't see that happening and I think we could do better.
Things changed when Tretter went down, IMO. If EDS is gone, then what?

Looking ahead to the 2014 draft, expiring contracts after the 2013 season and the 2014 season. TT is always looking ahead. That means that WR and CB come into play with Jones/Nelson/Cobbs and T Williams.

On top of that there is the recovery from injuries for many players (Bishop, Bulaga, Sherrod).

Lots of time for things to play out and contracts to be extended or not.

So what positions are you guys looking at for us this early? Tackle?WR? Safety?ILB?
ILB? We just gave Jones a "big" contract and still have Bishop/Hawk on the roster..

Hawk... Not a fan.

Jones' contract wasn't huge, and he's still an average to below average starter.

Wouldn't shock me at all if we look to upgrade.
But ILB isn't really a premium position at all. Ted has pretty much tipped his hand lately that he values the trenches much more than other positions. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see us go after another Left Tackle.
I would. It's going to be a defensive pick, most likely Safety. second round will go offense and possibly the third.
But you have to remember BPA. Thompson won't just go out and get a safety just to get one and I'd say he holds a high value on trench play. Do we need a FS right now? Yes but TT always has 1 eye on the future and he is obviously comfortable putting high pick into protecting Rodgers. Also TT apparently likes his safeties to be above average athletes at said position. Hence no Cyprien or Harrison Smith.
History tells us he likes to pick defense in the first. The only way we go LT is if Bulaga and Sherrod both flop hard. ILB is a possibility, but SILB doesn't exactly hold the greatest of position value. Neal at OLB has had a profound effect on me, so that's another possibility if only a slight one. DL is always on the table. Center is a possibility, but once again position value. Same with TE and IMO CB.

Tier 1 Players next year:

1. DE Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina- Future HOFer.
2. T Jake Mathews, Texas A&M- Jake Long without the goofy looks and better intelligence.
3. T Taylor Lewan, Michigan- Jake Long v2.
4. QB Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville- closest thin I've seen no Aaron Rodgers.

I'm not sure that David Fales or Jeff Mathews aren't better than Bridgewater, tbh. I really wish that Mathews didn't play for an Ivy League school.

I'm not sure the two tackles belong in that group. Right now, Bridgewater and Clowney are at the top by themselves IMO.

I wonder what a guy like Chris Borland from Wisconsin could do for this defense.

Not sure he is going to make the transition to the pro game right now. Will have to wait and see how he does in the pre-draft process. Right now I have a feeling that kid is a very good college player that really does not have much upside for the next level. Workouts and measurables will tell the tale for him.

Bridgewater is quite overrated IMHO.

I think we need to start concerning ourselves with NT. We didn't address it in the draft this year and now they're letting Raji play out the contract instead of extending him. Kind of a head scratcher for me...

Raji could get franchised. They may also look at Pickett as someone they could bring back for NT and get rather cheap for 1-2 more years (pending how this year goes). Gives them 2 more drafts to find a Raji replacement if he does sign elswhere as a FA.
There is only so much cash to go around. TT has been pretty good at managing the cap, and will continue to do so.

I have Marquis Lee as a tier 1 player too. Dont care about his size, guy is a stud.

Lee has great leaping ability and does a very good job of adjusting to the ball. I'm not sure he has the top end elite speed to be an elite prospect but he certainly is a very good player and has balled since day 1 in a big program.
