Mike Mauti [LB] Penn State
PRONUNCIATION: MAW-tee

Height: 6017
Weight: 243 lbs

32 1/2" arm length
10 1/2" hands
77 1/2" wing span

Quote:
STRENGTHS: Good size/length…above average read/react skills with smooth footwork to quickly change directions…uses his eyes extremely well to always be in correct position to make plays…physical, explosive striker due to timing and technique…outstanding feel in space…very smart and anticipates well…active and tough to block…relentless in pursuit…loves football and always gives top effort…rarely takes false steps, fluid in his drops…off-the-chart intangibles, heart of the defense.

WEAKNESSES: Only average speed and lacks elite range…good strength but not overpowering and will get hung up in traffic at times…needs to improve his ability to sidestep and avoid blockers…will underestimate speed and take wrong angles in coverage…lacks natural explosion or burst…extremely strong durability concerns after three serious knee injuries, tearing the ACL in his right knee (Aug. 2009) and left knee twice (Sept. 2011, Nov. 2012)…will he be able to return to his old form?

SUMMARY: Son of former NFL WR…very productive when on the field, but has struggled to stay healthy with 3 ACL tears over the past 4 years...very smart with the innate ability to sniff out plays…high intensity leader and never turns off the switch as the spark plug of the defense…wins with hustle and elite instincts rather than explosiveness or speed…if it weren’t for the knee injuries, he would be higher in the rankings and worth a top-40 pick, but the durability problems are a draft killer.

This is the type of risk player you take in the 7th round.

Between Mauti, Audie Cole, and Gerald Hodges, hopefully MN can find a third "starter" at LB.

Mauti easily has 2nd round talent, it will just depend on if his knees can hold up.

LB competition for a starting spot.
Everything else is locked.

I was banging the table for him in the 5th, just like I wanted to trade up to 18 for Floyd, but spielman outsmarted me again

Greenway tore his ACL twice, he's turned out pretty well...

Not THIS season. Clearly Vikings' brass had something else planned, as is evidenced by their not having used a 1st or 2nd rounder on a LB. I'm guessing that they are planning on signing Urlacher as a 2-year stopgap, and using next year's 1st or 2nd on someone to succeed him.

I'd guess we could slip Mauti to PS

This is the draft pick Minnesota needed to make. Low risk, high reward. Mauti is the type of leader we need in the middle. I am so giddy about this pick. His character was outstanding in face of adversity this year.
