I see the benefit in Locke in kickoffs, where he might be a better tackler.

i seriously doubt any special teams coach would decide between two kickoff specialist based on who can tackle better.

not to mention, a field goal kicker benefits from regular kicking opportunities during the game to keep his leg limber and to judge field and weather conditions.

I loved kluwe and I am coming to terms with the inevitability of his replacement.

One thing I was thinking of with Locke is the potential for the two kicker trick onside kick. Two kickers with 3 hands guys left center and right. Confusion city.

From all that I've heard recently, I had no idea Jeff Locke was as good as some are making him out to be.

Hope he improves our punt. I'd love to see us have some of the best Special Teams in the league.

I believe you realized the intention of my post.

But nitpick if you wish.

The decision won't come down to tackling ability. It is, however, one of several reasons that Locke might win the competition.

Other people have done a good job of discussing the main reasons Locke or Kluwe might make the 2013 Vikings roster. So I avoided repeating them in my post.

For those that haven't seen him kick.

here's to another 8.5 years of reliable punting and special teams play.

I remember a few years ago when special teams was a joke. Sure hester had an impact but it was scary and it is not anymore. I think the coaching staff has made a real effort to make it better. When we signed Kluwe it was great. Now I think he has worked his way out of town. He is expensive and his production is middle of the road. I personally am more worried about holding for our awesome young kicker. That is the experience am I am concerned of losing. Otherwise from a business perspective we have a younger, hungrier, very talented cheaper punter on staff and I am cool with that. Business is harsh. I get my butt punted every day. I am a big Kluwe fan and will continue to be one, but he may not get another job. I hope he does.

There are too many poor punters across the league, Kluwe wont have a problem finding work.

Only if he goes cheap. Otherwise he will be managing his band and game store.

i listened to an audio file of Kluwe on KFAN saying he could sign for the vet minimum which is around $900,000/year for a punter.

Kluwe's made, what, 8-10 million dollars while in his twenties? he has wisely lived off a modest portion of it and invested the rest. making another 3-4 mil while his career winds down would be the icing on the cake.

I'd love to see us have some of the best Special Teams in the league.

Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News puts out an annual review of the special teams performance of all 32 NFL teams, ranking them in 22 different categories. The team at the top of a particular category gets 1 point, while the bottom team in a category gets 32 points... so, much like golf, a lower score is better.

In Gosselin's rankings for 2012, the Vikings' special teams racked up a composite score of 253.5, making them the best special teams unit in the National Football League. The Vikings finished 22.5 points better than the Cincinnati Bengals, the team that finished runner-up. Gosselin points out that the Vikings were 29th in his rankings after the 2011 season, and the jump the team made this year is the biggest jump he's had since he's done these rankings.

How did they do it? Well, according to Gosselin...

"Minnesota booted the most field goals, committed the fewest turnovers and allowed the fewest points in the NFL this season on special teams. The Vikings finished in the top five in seven other categories and the top 10 in four more."

MN lost two components of that ranking in Kluwe and Harvin, wonder how Locke and Patterson wlll look.

Blair Walsh is what made that unit so dominant. Brilliant on FGs and booted so many kicks into the endzone.
