Gerald Hodges [LB] Penn State

Height: 6010
Weight: 243 lbs

32" arm length
9" hands
76" wing span

Combine

4.78 40 yd dash (1.67 10 yd split)
22 bench reps
35" vertical
8'6" broad jump
7.27 3-cone drill
4.29 short shuttle

Quote:
STRENGTHS: Above average athlete for the position with fast play speed and gets from A-to-B in a hurry…good lateral agility to avoid blocks and use his hands to shed blocks…active and rangy in pursuit…quick first step, sharp cuts and smooth COD skills with flexible ankles and knees…nice job rerouting WRs and TEs and resetting to quickly find the ball…aggressive blitzer and good open-field tackler…tough to keep him blocked very long…productive with back-to- back triple digit tackle seasons.

WEAKNESSES: Narrow trunk with limited room to get stronger…too reactionary and needs to develop his anticipation to gain proper positioning…can be knocked off-balance in a crowd, lacking elite strength to quickly disengage…inconsistent pursuit angles and gets himself in trouble by selling out on tackle attempts…needs to get better depth in his drops and is tough to trust in coverage right now…has some durability issues with a history of sporadically leaving the field due to bumps/bruises.

SUMMARY: Quality special teams player until emerging as a starter in 2011, leading the team in tackles the past two years with 100+ stops each season…outstanding athlete with sharp COD skills and the range to chase down plays with very little hesitation, even seeing time as a KR/PR in 2012…more athletic than strong with only average bulk and limited growth potential…probably not an every-down LB due to streaky instincts, which limits his pro ceiling, but he has enough tools for the NFL.

I'm assuming he'll be playing WILL. Henderson at MIKE?

Great pick. When mayock says he's a starting linebacker, I believe him.

Not an instinctive guy but a great read and react guy with tremendous closing speed. He often played as the nickel DB at Penn State. Good cover guy that should help us out a lot in that regard.

I dont really like this pick with a 1st round talent on the board in Rogers. Also a solid player like Patton.

Oh well, we went need over Bpa imo.

Considering the lack of talent we have at the position already, I'd hope he's a starter right away.

Penn State seems to produce a lot of good Linebackers. I really can't complain here. Good job Spielman.

So far, I'm on board for 3 out of the 4 picks we've taken, and all should see time right away.

Hodge is a former High School QB, and a former college Safety.

He's got good short area quickness.

Oh, and he's from linebacker U.

That alone means he has a shot.

1.67 is slower than teo and about the same burst as sharrif floyd. plys someone just said he isnt instinctive and is undersized. so we drafted a slower, undersized non instintinctive lb. but our 1st round was so great that im not even mad.

Short area quickness has nothing to do with straight-line speed...

Former wrestler as well that had been described as hard to block for a long time.

the 10 yard split isnt short area quickness? 1.67 isnt quick. there are several olinemen in this draft with sub 1.67 10 yard splits.

im not mad. just confused. i cant see him being better than brinkley when brinkleys issue was athleticism.

10 yard split is straight line acceleration. Nothing to do with short area quickness; it entails more lateral movement.

so you're telling me there will be no point where he has to accelerate in a straight forward direction whether it's straight to the sideline or straight ahead to the line of scrimmage? okay i believe you i guess.
