Strengths
Assignment-sure pounder between the tackles who plays with attitude. Usually responsible for taking on fullback and lineman blocks in the middle to free up teammates, but can use his hands to hold them off (when not sliding under) and shed to make plays. Shows enough speed to test guards’ quickness on blitzes. Relatively light on his feet in his coverage drops, can stay with tight ends and running backs in coverage. Good hustle, will chase running backs to the sideline and plays 10-15 yards downfield after coming on a blitz.
Weaknesses
Lunch-pail player who hasn’t yet shown great playmaking ability. Lacks straight-line speed to recover once behind a step in coverage or juked at the line of scrimmage, will also struggle to get angle on backs before they turn upfield at the next level.
NFL Comparison
Jason Phillips
Bottom Line
A tough-nosed, assignment-sure linebacker, Johnson is a strong run defender who has been overshadowed as a part-time starter on a star-studded Alabama defense. However, his unselfish play has been noticed, and he will likely be a mid-round selection for a 34 team in need of a middle linebacker.

Great fit imo. Has great chance to start for us from day one.

Not a big need for us but I would like us to grab one of these OLBs at some point too. Then we would have a deadly deep LB crew. Bass, Washington, McCray.

This might be my favorite pick. Still, I really, really wanted Tyler Wilson at this point. Maybe we'll have another shot in R5 or make a move.

Exactly what we need at that spot. All of his weaknesses will be hid perfectly by the role he'll play and standing next to Derrick Johnson.

Good solid thumping option.

Another things to consider about Nico. The guy eats up space and blockers. Could free up DJ to come a little more often...I like DJ playing aggressive.

I love this pick. I think he has a chance to come in and start day 1, which is more than you can hope for out of a 4th round selection. Sitting next to DJ will be awesome, I don't expect him to have big numbers, but I do expect that he will be better than Belcher (RIP).

I don't see him as a 3 down LBer. He's a bigger more physical version of Belcher. Would have preferred Khaseem Green or Sean Porter to be 3 down guys with DJ playing SILB.

I guess our UFA LBers will be our nickel guys (Jordan and Lemon).

Why one earth would you be expecting a low round pick to push DJ to SILB when he has consistently played WILB since we switched to the 3-4? And, for that matter, in the 4-3 he was always a weakside backer too. DJ is just fine in the nickel too.

In the 4-3 DJ played all 3 positions for us.

I think in today's NFL DJ is a perfect fit for SILB. He's BA against the run and good enough to cover all RBs and most TEs. Ideally I wanted someone next to him about his equal. Someone who could also cover anything short of a WR and be physical in the run game.

The days of a thumper ILB are over IMO. Some teams may choose that way, but IMO its a way of the past. Give me two ILBs who can cover and I'll be a happy man. That way we don't tip our hand switching guys.

He was my back up plan to Jon Bostic. He is strictly a two down back at this stage of his development. Takes on blocks well and is a solid tackler. Nothing sexy but definitely fits a need. Very solid pick.

Reid said fourth-round pick Nico Johnson will compete with free-agent newcomer Akeem Jordan for an starting inside linebacker spot. My money is on Johnson. Big-league player.
