Didn't half the forum just light up a guy for saying we take a guy for depth on the OL, but everyone is alright with this pick? Laughing Laughing Laughing

I won't say I don't like this pick since I know nothing of this guy, but I don't feel like we're in the position to draft for depth in round 3. Especially a position where we probably have our two best players on defense (at least near the end of the season).

Former safety. Almost looks like he could go that way.

Someone explain this pick to me....

From what I saw on the highlight reel that NFLN showed, he looks like a smaller Rennie Curran. Please tell me I'm wrong about that. Pray

I loved the Titans first two picks, but this one has me shaking my head..

Think Zach Brown. Almost identical in size to Brown.

Ayers to DE?

No other reason to pick a OLB this early.

Ayers is way to small for that, no way that happens. This is for depth and ST help.

We're picking someone who will rarely see the field on defense in the 3rd round?

I just can't buy something like that.

Gotta be something up their sleeve.

Maybe this is in case McCarthy goes down again or to replace him, but putting at LB they is 250 at DE wont work.

I meant as more of a specialist DE, removing Ayers from the starting lineup at LB. Ayers struggles in coverage, and while decent in run support, his biggest strength is rushing the passer.

Maybe they feel Gooden is a better overall LB than Ayers. I dunno. But if we picked a purely depth LB/special teamer in the third round, it would blow my mind.

We have depth on the OL, we just didn't have any starters there. For the LBs we needed depth, I would of much rather had a DE, but I'm not mad about this pick.

Has a lot to do with the fact that we don't need depth on the interior of our offensive line, we desperately need depth at LB.

What depth do we have at LB? We have a TON of depth at OL. Not so much at LB. Spoon is getting old and slow, Shaw and Bailey should never see the field on D, Only legit depth is Fokou.

Really don't care for this pick. Maybe it works out, maybe we're fine with our current situation on the defensive line. I know we needed depth at LB, but was certainly hoping for an inside LB for when McCarthy gets hurt 8 times next season.

I see he has excellent speed. Makes me think he will play a role in nickel packages with Brown.

Solid pick up. Looks like he could develop into something at LB. Fill in for injuries, push for starting time.... Good pick.

Sounds a lot like Z.Brown according to NFLN.

I was still hoping for a DE. I'll take it though. The depth is MUCH needed.

Interesting. CBS Sports compares Gooden to ... Zach Brown of #Titans.

Called it! Laughing

Analysis

STRENGTHS: At 6-2 and 233 pounds, Gooden possesses a lean, athletic-looking frame and ideal build to play the weak side at the next level. Extremely explosive in a straight line, exhibiting a strong initial burst and elite vertical speed for the position. Has displayed an improved willingness recently to get physical at the line and persist through contact.

Quick to close on his gap against the run and displays adequate flexibility to establish low leverage on contact when engaging blockers. When active with his hands, exhibits quickness and pop to routinely disengage. Fluid drop in coverage and quick hips to turn and run with the tight end or slot receiver vertically.

WEAKNESSES: In coverage, he's still a bit raw, at times flipping his hips in the wrong direction while anticipating routes. First step isn't as explosive coming out of a hip flip/transition. Late to diagnose the run at times. Will take shallow angles on runs to the outside, and will often find himself forced to chase the play down from behind as a result.

Leads with his shoulder and drops his head at times when engaging bigger blockers, and doesn't get his arms extended consistently. Exhibits only marginal lateral fluidity and does struggle at times to break down and make tackles in space. Better in man-coverage than zone right now, as he tends to lock onto the backfield and lose track of receivers in the area.

COMPARES TO: Zach Brown, OLB, Tennessee Titans - Like Brown, Gooden possesses rare speed and explosiveness for his size, but is still learning to utilize it properly on the football field. He does appear further along in the instincts department, however, and is a more consistent tackler than Brown was at North Carolina. Thus, I could see Gooden having similar, if not better first-year success than Brown, after being picked up somewhere between rounds two and four.

Well imagine that. Now we got two of them. How sick is our LB corp now?
Smile

More I think about it, more I like it. Can never have too much speed on defense and there's been talk of us moving to more three safety looks. Can be a great nickel backer and would allow us to still survive if Colin misses a few games.

You think Ayers would move to the middle?

Brown and Gooden seem a little small/soft for the middle.

I'm not sure we would have a true MLB in that situation. We'd probably run a ton of sets that have either Wilson or Pollard playing completely in the box. Plus, it's not like McCarthy's the biggest guy, only listed at 238.

Watching a little bit of tape on him right now.

Seems to have really good hands for a linebacker. And of course his speed.

Doesn't seem too afraid to take on blockers.

I could see a Ruby package something like

Morgan - Hill/Casey - Wimbley/Ayers

Brown - Gooden

McCourty Verner - Wreh-Wilson

Pollard - Griff - Wilson

Lots of options.
