With the 36th pick of the 2013 NFL draft, your Detroit Lions select.......

Darius Slay, CB Mississippi State.

Quote:
Strengths

Slay has a very good combination of height and speed for a cornerback, and combined with fluid hips, he proved he can hang with some of the nationís best wideouts against SEC competition at Mississippi State.

He uses his recovery speed well to catch up with receivers and make plays on the ball, and has very good ball skills. With the ball in his hands, he is a threat to turn an interception into a big play the other way with his speed and open-field running ability. He is also a solid run defender and efficient tackler.

Weaknesses

Only a one-year starter for the Bulldogs, Slay remains a raw and inconsistent player.

He needs to get his hands on receivers more consistently in man coverage. In both man and zone, his instincts are subpar, as he tends to look toward the quarterback too often and can sometimes lose a receiver to leave them open.

I liked Taylor more and liked Brown and Tank over him.

Oh well. Guess they really like his upside.

I actually like the pick stay defense and getting Slay the kid has some ball skills and we need to address the defense.

Not a bad pick I can live with it!

Agreed. He wasn't really on my radar at this pick. It's especially concerning that Mayock said rumors are he has a meniscus tear and may not be ready for training camp. I would have rather had a lot of people. It could have been worse, like Denard or something, but it could have been a lot better.

Not big on him.

Cover skills are nothing special, and a very poor tackler.

Only the Lions. This is certainly a surprise.

I like it. The only problem is the knee. If the knee holds up-good pick. If not-well you know. Surprised at the number of people not so happy. Good player.

yea just not a huge fan of him, hope he turns out though. Feel like we just keep drafting Cb's after the first round every year and none ever pan out really. Also feel like there were better players on the board. Only time will tell if they made the right call but for now im a little down on this pick Sad

I can't get excited about injured players, we have enough of those.

He was right behind Jamar Taylor in my corner rankings, I just wish we would've taken the better, healthier player.

There were starters available, but we'd rather continue to take the guys who need to be nursed while everyone else is in TC.

I liked Taylor more but I can live with Slay. Good ball skills. Fast. Pretty long armed. The two things I like about him is that he will come up and make a tackle, not a big hitter but a solid wrap up guy, and second he attacks the ball. If a receivers gets his hands on the ball he has a knack for slapping it away causing quite a bit of drops and breakups.

This is the highest the Lions have drafted a corner since Fair right? Sure seems like it.
