And people are saying our offseason isn't quiet and underrated... this move puts us over the top IMO. 19-0.

Waste of a signing knowing at the end, Tyrod will be the backup. Plus the kid is horrible. Would much rather had signed JaMarcus Russell.

Wouldn't call it a wasted signing. Not a lot of guys at QB have (A) starting/playoff experience and (B) the ability to be used as an expendable camp body. Not a sexy signing, nor one that will likely be remembered as having any tangible impact on the 2013 season, but i get it.

I don't really know why the Ravens bother doing this. Just to give Tyrod Taylor a bit of competition for Training Camp? Forget Ozzie and Harbs and their, 'yeah, we absolutely could have three QBs on the 53-man roster', because that ain't happening.

I'd rather they just grabbed a UDFA QB after the draft, and let him fight it out with Taylor. Hell, even draft Collin Klein in the 7th and then convince him he should be a TE instead when he doesn't beat Taylor out in Training Camp.

They sign guys like this to try and get a decent arm in camp to throw. It will help our younger guys develop better if they have a halfway accurate guy throwing to them, and then before the season starts he's gone. It's the same reason we signed Painter last off-season. It's just a camp arm.

They'd be better off using a jugs machine than Caleb Hanie.

Agreed. And more than that, it's also an extra arm for organized team activities. We can sign an UDFA rookie, but then they're not going to be as adept with an NFL playbook, they're not going to have had as much time with the playbook as signing a QB now.

That and there's also the intangible aspect. A guy like Hanie isn't going to be just a QB, he's going to be a part of the team as a guy. He's going to command some respect from other players due to his veteran status. Just like Brendon Ayanbadejo might not have ever been a star, but if he has some pointers he can dish out to a younger player, most likely he's going to receive his fair share of respect. Hanie might be able to pull a young receiver to the side and make some suggestions about a route and how to fake out a CB, things he's seen from some of the WRs he's worked with in the past.

So sure Hanie, may not make the team, but his value is in the intangibles he brings to the situation as well as a camp arm to help keep Flacco's arm fresh for the season.

We haven't carried three qbs on the roster for like three years...
