The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Lions and star quarterback Matthew Stafford on working on a long term deal will probably put him up there with Romo and Flacco.

http://blacksportsonline.com/home/2013/04/report-lions-and-matthew-stafford-working-on-long-term-deal/

This off-season, Cowboys QB Tony Romo and Ravens QB Joe Flacco already received their $100 million contracts, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers should get his soon and now the Lions might do the same with QB Matthew Stafford.

In 2011 Stafford became just the 4th quarterback in NFL history to pass for at least 5,000 yards in a season (after Tom Brady, Dan Marino and Drew Brees) and also added 41 touchdown passes while throwing for only 16 INTs.

In 2012 however Stafford suffered a slump, passing for only 20 TDs and 17 INTs.

Stafford said he would love a long term deal and said talks are ongoing. He said he isn't too worried about it

Move on to what? Stafford isn't a perfect player by any means, but guys with his combination of age, experience, and physical abilities don't just grow on trees. He's the best quarterback the Lions have had in 50 years and they're supposed to move on and play who at QB? Also, it is a major stretch to call the guy "terrible" unless you believe about half the league's quarterbacks are also terrible.

"Terrible"? Really...?

Confused

Stafford is far from "terrible". Obviously he had a down year in 2012, but was outstanding in 2011. Kid has a lot of potential and the best option for the Lions right now. There were times Joe Flacco looked "terrible" too. Good thing for the Ravens they didn't give up on him early...

Anyway, while I do think Stafford can be a good QB, this resigning seems premature. Hopefully for the Lions he doesn't get one of those mega-deals... would want to see how he plays in 2013 first.

This isn't really premature. He was drafted 1 year after Flacco and Flacco ran out his whole contract. Lions are doing it 1 year before it runs out. Romos hadn't run out either.

Might be a good time to sign him after a down year, maybe get a better deal for the team.

Stafford hasn't proven as much as Flacco, or even Romo.

I'm optimistic about Stafford myself but for all we know, 2011 was the anomaly and 2012 was the real Stafford. Signing him to a long-term deal now is very risky.

Agreed. Pretty smart move by the Lions. If he has a huge year next year, they'd have to really overpay him.

Eh... on the flip side, the contracts other QBs have signed so far this season will probably drive the price up. Also Stafford is currently playing on a big rookie contract (he was drafted before the rookie contract reform). His contract expires in 2015, but he still has 23.5 million left on his contract for the new two years in base salary and 7 million left in guaranteed money (source: http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/detroit-lions/matthew-stafford/). In the event of an extension, Stafford isn't going to sign a deal that causes him to lose that money (though it may be redistributed).

If Stafford is resigned, it will probably be lower than Romo or Flacco but the Lions will still have to offer large deal for Stafford to agree to the extension, likely with a lot of guaranteed money. While this may be slightly cheaper than a deal signed next year after a good year by Stafford, at least the Lions will know whether or not he is worth that money. If they give him a large deal this year and Stafford ends up putting up another bad season like he did in 2012, the Lions are in a very poor position (similar, and perpaps worse than the Mark Sanchez situation).

It seems Stafford's contract does not expire in 2014 but rather 2015. That gives the Lions another year to evaluate him before they need to start extension talks. I think they'd be wise to take it... there is a very real possibly that Stafford isn't the answer.. and they don't want to be in a position that they are married to him for another 6 years.

According to sportrac, there are 2 years left on his contract, not 1.

In his defense, he probably thinks there are about 8 QBs in the NFL who aren't terrible. Laughing

Considering Stafford just turned 25 and has some major cap hits coming up, I don't blame the Lions for trying to extend him now. Problem is, the contract will most likely average at least $20m per season...

Dont pay attention to this guy.

Complete fraud.

He blames Stafford for throwing away games in which his teammates fumble away.

He's seen him play a total of maybe 5 times.

Well in 2012 we had multiple WR injuries and our TE's had their worst years. We also missed the presence of Jahvid Best. In 2011 our WR's were healthy, our TE's played to their abilities, and we had Best for a little bit. Based off of those things 2012 seems to be the anomaly.
